Walking more doesn’t always mean walking better. 👣
Walking is a complex task. It relies on strength, balance, postural control, weight transfer, coordination, sensation, confidence and endurance all working together.
If the underlying problem hasn’t been identified, simply practising more walking can sometimes reinforce the same inefficient movement pattern.
Someone may be managing with:
• Shuffling
• Reduced foot clearance
• Knee hyperextension
• Circumduction
• Poor weight transfer
But the real driver could be weakness, reduced trunk control, poor single-leg stability, limited range, spasticity, altered motor control or sensory loss.
That’s why neurological rehabilitation should go beyond simply walking up and down.
The aim is to understand why walking is difficult, target the contributing factors and then build those improvements back into meaningful, real-life walking.
The goal isn’t just more steps.
It’s walking that is:
✔ Safer
✔ More efficient
✔ More independent
✔ Less effortful
✔ More adaptable in everyday life
At IAB Neuro Rehab, specialist neurological physiotherapy assessment helps us break down the movement problem and identify what needs to change.
