The Smile Within: the art show in aid of BDA Benevolent Fund and Bridge2Aid
🎨 The Smile Within is coming to the British Dental Conference & The Dentistry Show —and it’s all about supporting mental health and wellbeing in dentistry.

Sometimes you don’t realise how much you miss creating… until something gently invites you back to it.

Aneeka Ashraf (Dental Core Trainee 2) has moved location every year of her clinical career—chasing growth, experience, and the next challenge. Somewhere in the middle of training, relocation, and life shifting around her, art went quiet.

Then The Smile Within opened a door.

Her piece, Serenity, is a love letter to the work nobody sees: the care, patience, trust and resilience that happen beneath the surface—long before a smile feels easy again.

Featured artwork: Serenity (original acrylic on deep edged canvas, gloss finish, 18 x 24")
Minimum bid: £80

🎨 The Smile Within is coming to the British Dental Conference & The Dentistry Show —and it’s all about supporting mental health and wellbeing in dentistry.

Meet Richard Graham — a retired general dental practitioner whose lifelong love of nature and photography lies at the heart of his contribution to The Smile Within exhibition.

For Richard, photography isn’t about technical perfection or labels. It’s about capturing moments, memories, and the restorative power of being outdoors. From insects and woodland scenes to dramatic landscapes, his photographs reflect mindfulness, patience, and the simple joy of slowing down.

As a former BDA President and Patron of the BDA Benevolent Fund, Richard has spent decades supporting colleagues in dentistry — both professionally and creatively. His photography offers a reminder that in a demanding profession, reconnecting with nature can be a powerful antidote to stress.

Richard is exhibiting four framed photographic prints drawn from meaningful moments spent fishing, walking, and travelling — each image preserving not just a scene, but a feeling. All works are available, starting at a minimumm bid of £30 each.

✨ “Photography helps me enjoy the moment — and then brings it back to me… sometimes years later. Capturing those moments is precious.”

🌅 When patience, light, and place come together, stories emerge.

Damien Walmsley’s photography is rooted in observation, stillness, and quiet storytelling. A retired academic dentist and Emeritus Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham, Damien’s creative journey has evolved alongside his professional life — from early film photography to a reflective practice shaped by landscape, atmosphere, and human experience.

His featured work Cool Light on Poppies was captured at dawn near Kinver Edge — a scene shaped by careful planning and patient waiting as mist rolled in and the poppies took on a magical look in the cool morning light.
💷 Minimum bid: £300

Alongside this, Mystery in the Fog offers a more cinematic, otherworldly moment — photographed during the third COVID‑19 lockdown at Umberslade Park, showing figures moving through dense fog towards a distant beam of light, echoing uncertainty, isolation, and quiet hope.
💷 Minimum bid: £100

For Damien, photography is about more than making images; it’s about creating space to pause, reflect, and feel — a mindful practice that invites you to step into the story and make it your own.

The Smile Within: the art show in aid of BDA Benevolent Fund and Bridge2Aid
🎨 The Smile Within is coming to the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show—and it’s all about supporting mental health and wellbeing in dentistry.

✨ Featured Artwork: The Space Between ✨
This powerful photographic work by Martin Curran, Specialist Oral Surgeon and lifelong observer, captures a quiet moment just before dawn — that space where darkness has not yet lifted, but light has already begun its work.

Taken spontaneously at Kelly’s Hotel, Rosslare, shortly before 5 a.m., the image reflects stillness, patience, and the gentle nature of recovery. Silhouetted trees hold the darkness, the sea remains calm and steady, and a soft line of light appears on the horizon — a reminder that meaningful change often arrives quietly.

For Martin, photography is an act of mindfulness: noticing what is already there, pausing, and allowing the moment to be exactly as it is. Paired with reflective text, The Space Between speaks directly to mental wellbeing — especially within demanding professions — and reminds us that healing does not need to be forced to be real.

📍 Available via auction and at the exhibition https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/ticketing/bridge2aids-silent-auction

✨ Meet the Artist Behind the Art (and the Dentistry!) ✨

We’re delighted to shine a spotlight on Jenna Davies — a Swansea‑based dentist and artist whose work beautifully blends creativity, curiosity and kindness. 🦋🎨

By day, Jenna works in general dental practice across South Wales. By passion, she’s an artist whose colourful, experimental approach to painting became especially meaningful during the pandemic, supporting her own mental wellbeing and inspiring others — particularly dental teams — to reconnect with creativity without pressure or perfectionism.

Jenna’s work embraces bold colour, layered textures and playful mark‑making, encouraging us to slow down, be present and notice beauty even when life feels overwhelming. Her featured pieces, Calm Amongst the Chaos and Be Kind, reflect themes of mindfulness, nature, inclusivity and compassion — values that sit at the heart of everything she does. 🌈

Beyond the canvas, Jenna also runs creative wellbeing and team‑building workshops for dental teams, offering a relaxed space to step away from clinical stress, collaborate and create something meaningful together. The result? A shared artwork and a shared sense of connection.

You can see two of Jenna’s works featured in The Smile Within exhibition, and she’ll be attending in person — come and say hello!

The Smile Within: the art show in aid of BDA Benevolent Fund and Bridge2Aid

🎨 The Smile Within is coming to the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show—and it’s all about supporting mental health and wellbeing in dentistry.

Not every powerful image is planned. Some are captured on the move—quiet, honest moments that stay with you.

During a Bridge2Aid outreach trip to Tanzania, Georgios Giazitzis began photographing life unfolding between clinics while travelling in and around Mwanza. Shot from a minibus, the series takes in wide skies, open fields, villages, workers mid-task, and pauses for rest—small snapshots of everyday life at a different pace.

The photographs aren’t staged; they’re rooted in gesture, colour, environment, and those brief flashes of connection—sometimes even a shared smile—between photographer and subject.

Three framed A4 prints (black frame, white mount) are now featured in The Smile Within, with a minimum bid of £50 each.

Meet Palwasha Rafi—a dentist and watercolour artist whose work is rooted in presence, gentleness, and the quiet power of noticing.

She started painting during dental school as a form of self-care—an antidote to perfectionism and the pressure of always having to “show up.” Now, her four-piece collection A Quiet Bloom invites you to slow down, come closer, and linger with the softness of spring.

If you’ve ever felt you needed a studio, expensive materials, or permission to begin—this is your reminder: creativity can be simple, small, and yours.

Bid on Palwasha’s original works (minimum bid £30) and support two meaningful causes https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/ticketing/bridge2aids-silent-auction
