Living in alignment with natures rhythms is at the core of Ayurvedic health. When we find the right type of foods and activities that support our balance, we feel more aliveness, joy and peace within. Summer, pitta season offers us so much diversity in many ways. One of them are fruits, which can be often found no further than in your local woods, community gardens, parks or hedgerows.

Picking them while visiting my homeland,
Poland brought some good childhood memories. Engaging with wild foraging helps me to connect to my ancestors, who knew this skill very well and were deeply connected to their land. For me, it’s best part of the summer when I’m out in nature, finding it’s wild bounty.

This season findings included lots of wild berries info. blueberries + leaf, whitecurrants, redcurrants, raspberries + leaf, cherries, strawberries, blackberries + leaf and some summer apples.
One of the way I’d eat them during this time is raw and in lightly spiced stew fruit or kompot.

Fruit is cooling and best to enjoy in the summer. Sticking to seasonal and local growth will be best choice for supporting your gut health. It’s taste, rasa is mainly sweet, sour and astringent. Most fruit is light and sattvic so they purify body and mind. In general it builds the blood, helps regulate sugar metabolism, supports elimination and mildly cleanses and nurture. For instance, some of them that are considered rasayana fruit, bring about rejuvenation and detoxification as well as nourishment.

Wishing you much seasonal alignment and joy!

Let me know in the comment what is your favourite summer fruit? 🫐

Pitta time, the season of heat, light, expansion and mobility. Despite high humidity in some parts of the world, the cumulative heat has drying effect on the body and mind, hence summer is considered drying too.

When pitta accumulates, our systems overheat and get dry so we may experience symptoms like enhanced belching, skin problems (eczema, acne), loose stools, quick to hunger, burning sensation, inflammation, fever, excessive sweating, feel easily irritated or angry, sight problems or being impatient.

Ayurveda offers us simple, effective ways of adjusting our unique constituents - prakruti to ever changing seasons, through lifestyle - vihar and diet - ahar, to feel nourished and at ease rather than depleted, few weeks/months down the road.

How to balance pitta naturally?
• eat heavier, lightly cocked, warm meals with a moderate use of spices: fennel, coriander, cumin, dill, turmeric, ginger (for best support of your agni - digestive fire)
• eat at consistent times within 4-6h (to allow the body fully digest previous meal)
• choose seasonal, local, fresh foods over processed, refined sugar foods
• favour primarily SWEET - BITTER - ASTRINGENT (coconut, maple syrup, ghee, quinoa, rice, parsnip, carrot, blueberry, raspberry, gooseberry, blackberry, avocado, cucumber, cabbage, leafy greens, climbing peas) and limit SPICY - SOUR - SALTY ones (tomatoes, chillies, garlic, onion, fermented foods, coffee, red meat, alcohol)
• choose wild herbs and edibles: stinging nettle, rose hip , chamomile, aloe vera, calendula, mint, meadow sweet, plantain, sorrel, clever to name a few..
• look after your hydration levels; have your meals cooked in water and sip regularly on small amounts of room temp. water
• cultivate compassionate, grounding and softening way of movement rather than competitive approach (yoga, t’ai chi, swimming or walks in nature)
• cool your mind with practicing meditation and Moon gazing; Ayurveda’s principle is ‘like attracts like and opposite brings balance’ so by pausing you balance pitta’s intensity
• engage more with playful, creative and leisure activities

Whenever you take a walk now, you can’t help but notice the beautiful colours and smells of wildly blossoming plants. One of them that I’d like to share about is ‚Rose hip’ ~ ‚Wild rose’ ~ ’Rosa canina’. In Ayurveda it’s valued for its astringent (🫐 + 💨) and cooling properties, something that nature gives as for balancing the hot, sharp, intense and dry qualities. It’s a powerful tri-doshic remedy that pacified all three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) - specifically celebrated for balancing excess heat in the body. It’s got primarily astringent, sweet and slightly bitter taste (rasa) with light and dry quality (guna). It’s action (prabhava) is heart supporting and rejuvenating - nourishes deeply the tissues and boost vitality (rasayana). It helps to pacify digestive heat, ulcers and inflammatory skin conditions. Taken topically works well on skin complexion, heals wrinkles and improves elasticity. Taken internally (tea - decoction - juice) helps to clear toxins (ama), soothes respiratory track and supports digestion.

This season, I was inspired to create soothing skin tonic - a simple recipe for balancing pitta symptoms (🔥+ 💦)

Method:
Freshly picked wild rose petals cover with filtered water (ratio 1:4) and bring to simmer for about 30min.
Take off the heat and let it cool before straining the liquid into a glass dish/bottle.
Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
Apply on tired, dry skin in the morning and evening for cleansing, soothing and hydrating effect.
Enjoy the smell as you do so 🙂

What’s your favourite way of cooling pitta symptoms this summer? Let me know in the comment..

Love spring wild foraging and adding some juicy bitters to my foods, as part of balanced, wholesome diet. Ayurveda sees seasonal changes as an opportunity to find alignment with nature through letting go what no longer serves and adjusting our bodies~minds to ever changing outside conditions. Like now, we are in kapha season, known for its heavy, wet, dense and cold qualities. Knowing Ayurvedic principles: Like attracts Like and the Opposite brings Balance, we then want to introduce more foods and activities that will contribute to promoting warmth, flow, dryness and lightness. Luckily we need to look no further than what grows on our doorsteps. Abundance of wild bitter greens right now that with their drying and cleansing nature, gently support body’s natural processes of detoxification and bring more flow to our systems (drying ama). Bitter taste (tikta) promotes the flavour of other tastes (rasa) and with its dry and light quality it kindles digestive fire (agni). It increases vata (+) and decreases pitta (-) and kapha (-). It provides relief to inflammatory conditions like burning sensation, itching or other pitta related skin disorders. In minimum amounts it improves digestion and relieves intestinal gas. In moderate amount it is good for pancreas, introversion of the mind and self - awareness. We can find this flavour primarily in wild bitter greens, turmeric, aloe vera, dandelion root, cacao, tea, fenugreek, coriander, chamomile, neem oil, cleavers, nettle leaf and lettuce 🥬

If you’d like to try this spring juice recipe, just comment SPRING 🌱

🌿 non - stinging nettle is considered a base component for some vegeterian dishes and salads for ex. for making a traditional rice porridge in Japan also called ‘seven spring herb’

🌿 Lamium can prevent musculoskeletal and menstrual disorders, and improves fat metabolism

🌿 aerial and flowering parts are used to treat variety of renal issues, including kidney stones

🌿 also used in treating hypertension, depression, paralysis, trauma, hemorrhage and some gynaecological disorders (vaginal and cervical inflammation)

🌿 in ancient herbal texts such as ‘The Herball’ by John Gerard in 1597 he wrote a phrase “To make make the heart merry, to make a good colour in the face and to refresh the vital spirits” is how the plant is known for enhancing mood and vigour
