Many people have asked for a breakdown of triple negative breast cancer. It’s hard to be extremely specific about each and every case, but I hope this overview is helpful

IMPORTANT RANT TIME - I am exasperated and sad to see women not know where to turn to for all the essential aspects of post cancer treatment care. It’s impossible to navigate this alone, even for those who are internet savvy. I’m building up to a mission where all women can access all the essential support services they need as part of their cancer care. Uniformly. Some centres are doing this really well. We can learn from each other. Point me and us towards each other so we can collaborate and push for better access to services

How do we advocate for our patients when the most important person, YOU, is not in the room? This is a multidisciplinary team meeting or tumor board. It’s where all new patients and post op results are discussed including secondary cancer patients- with a room full of specialists using the most accurate information to hand and taking into account personal circumstances. We tailor an individual treatment plan for each person. Of course though, the final decision lies with you. We can only make recommendations and I hope you feel supported by your team overall

Staying flat after mastectomy, whether for cancer or risk reduction is a personal choice and completely valid. Not everyone has to have a breast reconstruction. However it is really important to take into consideration your body shape, body fat and to really understand scar placement and the aesthetic expectation after a mastectomy. If possible asked to see photos of other results so you know what to expect- this is not always possible in a busy clinic. I feel it is a standard that anyone having a mastectomy is marked for surgery (that is with a marker pen) before they go to the operating theatre in a seated or standing position. And do not be afraid to ask where your scar will be placed and expectations for the side of your chest wall - does an extended or differently planned scar need to be placed to help tackle the excess fat in this area? Sometimes a scar has to be placed high on the chest wall because of where the tumour is. Either way this takes meticulous surgical planning in order to get the best outcomes

For anyone of childbearing ago with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Share if it can be helpful to anyone. Young women face many unique challenges when they face a cancer diagnosis and the treatment ahead may make having a baby difficult. Hope this is useful and gives hope.

No the interpretation of these posts are not that sugar feeds cancer and certainly not that GLP1’s are the answer to reducing the risk of getting breast cancer. The study mentioned, highlights probable beneficial effects on metabolic control of diabetes and weight that have benefit in breast cancer recurrence in this retrospective study. Either way, with larger, higher level data studies, we’re looking at some really interesting information here.

Share for anyone navigating breast cancer surgery. Making decisions at a time of diagnosis is really tough. Especially if it means discussing breast aesthetics. Many women are ashamed to ask about this as they think they need to be grateful the cancer will be removed. But this is your right. To understand your options, scar placement, expectations and shape are all important. Hope this helps

Why do so many people change their diets after a cancer diagnosis? It’s quite understandable but beware of people selling things with no evidence and preying on the vulnerable. Stick with what we know in science

Cording. Axillary web syndrome. Tight bands in the armpit soon after surgery. Quite common and very treatable. But undoubtedly very unpleasant if it’s bad.

Post mastectomy pain is real. Not enough women are told about the t before undertaking surgery. It can be difficult to manage and even harder if you feel it’s hard to know what pain is due to this or due to concerning factors. There are lines of management that can be really successful, so do speak to your team about referrals if you’re suffering
