FarmAbility

FarmAbility FarmAbility runs a practical outdoor programme for adults with a learning disability and/or autism on farms and gardens in Oxfordshire.

FarmAbility is an outdoor, farm-based programme of animal husbandry, horticulture and seasonal tasks for adults with autism and learning disabilities. These are our co-farmers. Working in small groups, supported by enthusiastic staff and volunteers, co-farmers gain a real sense of purpose and achievement, while building the practical and vocational skills they need to move forward in their lives.

It’s national Volunteers Week 2026, an annual celebration recognizing the vital contributions of volunteers across communities. On Monday, we hosted an amazing group of corporate volunteers from Mace. THANK YOU so much to the fantastic team who worked sooooo hard laying this beautiful, tiled floor.

This is actually a double thank you to Mace Construct as the tiles they laid had been donated by Mace just 3 months earlier!

Having a cleanable floor in our indoor space at Willowbrook Farm is a huge step forward, this helps reduce dust and consequently supports our co-farmers and staffing physical and mental health.

We have been fortunate to work with Mace a number of times over the last couple of years and value their generosity and aptitude for building work.

Generous donations of both time and materials such as this enable us to spend our precious funds on delivering our service. If you/your employer would like to support FarmAbility via the donation of materials, donation of skills and/or corporate volunteering, do please contact us: [email protected]

Thank you Mace Construct, please come again!

May so far at FarmAbility…

At Park Farm we’ve been cuddling lambs and cats and perfecting our pottery and woodwork skills.

At Gagingwell we’ve been making a dent in the compost pile and creating brand new veggie beds.

At Sandy Lane we’ve been working as a team to soil sieve and feeding lettuces to the chickens.

At Willowbrook we made a new bench to enjoy sitting outside in the summer.

And at Long Hanborough we always make sure we have the right PPE… even for watering the Dahlias!

Did you celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day?

Last week we gathered in the woods at Long Hanborough to listen to the dusk chorus…

We marvelled at a Song Thrush’ intricate nest and diverse vocals and we learnt the difference between blackbird’s and robin’s song. Highlights were hearing a woodpecker drumming and one hoot of an owl! 🐦‍⬛ 🦉

It's National Hedgerow Week! Earlier this year, over 3 planting days, a team of 12 co-farmers, 5 volunteers, and 4 staff members, planted a new hedgerow along a fence line at our Gagingwell (near Chipping Norton) site.

Through funding from CPRE Oxfordshire and Wild Oxfordshire Hedgerow Heroes, we have planted 110m of mixed native hedgerow over the past 2 years! This new hedgerow will enhance the site and help to increase biodiversity, supporting wildlife and reducing carbon in years to come.

The spare, leftover whips were used to fill gaps in an established hedgerow elsewhere on site.

To find out more about National Hedgerow Week, please visit: https://treecouncil.org.uk/seasonal-campaigns/national-hedgerow-week/

With thanks to both CPRE and Wild Oxfordshire (especially Jess) who have supported us with our hedgerow planting!

Coming to the Oxford Playhouse next week (13th-16th May), we thought the "Perfect Show for Rachel" would be of interest to the FarmAbility community - members of the FarmAbility team are going and really looking forward to it!

"Flo is an award-winning theatre director, and Rachel is her learning disabled older sister. Five years ago they decided to see if they could create Rachel’s perfect show: fast paced, funny, and different every night.

All performances are Relaxed Performances, though due to the nature of the show, loud noises and flashing lights may feature. Audience members are welcome to come and go from the auditorium during the show as needed.

All performances include a mixture of creative captioning, live captioning and integrated BSL, meaning it will be accessible for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences. Due to the improvised nature of some parts of the show, some scenes may just have creative captions or integrated BSL."

Visit https://www.oxfordplayhouse.com/events/perfect-show-for-rachel for further info and to book tickets!

Following sold-out performances at London's Barbican and Sheffield Theatres, Perfect Show for Rachel is a critically acclaimed theatre experience!✨
