This is Paul, a member of our 6pm Poppleton group on Wednesday evenings at All Saints Church Hall. He recently shared his story with us in group and it is a powerful reminder that weight loss isn’t just about the scales—it’s about mental strength, community, and never giving up 💙
(Please note: Paul’s story touches on mental health struggles, baby loss, and su***de loss).
"I’ve battled my weight for a long time, but I’ve battled my mental health for 30 years. That has been a much tougher war to win. I’ve been at rock bottom in the past, and while I still experience days of anxiety, stress, and depression, I am so grateful to say that with the right help and support, I haven’t been back to those darkest depths in a long time."
Paul first joined Slimming World in Bedford back in 2011. He flew through his journey, losing 3st 5.5lbs in less than 20 weeks, hitting his target, and training for a half-marathon.
Life felt perfect: he was losing weight, getting fit, getting married, and expecting a baby boy. But tragedy struck.
"We went for a routine check-up, only to discover our beautiful son, George Toby, was sleeping. He was born sleeping later that day. The heartbreak was unimaginable. The very next morning, I went for a run. I decided I couldn’t let the grief destroy me, so I used George as my inspiration for my upcoming half-marathon. When I went back to my Slimming World group, the members wrapped their arms around me in support."
Over the next few years, life brought more major changes. Paul’s marriage ended, he left group, and the weight crept back on. But he knew where to find support when he was ready to return.
"The second time around, I took it easier on myself. I didn’t restrict my Syns like before; I enjoyed my treats, and the weight came off slower and steadier.
Eventually, I moved back home to York to help care for my dad. After a few changes in my routine, I found my way to Vicki’s wonderful Poppleton group. I’ll admit, I’m quite shy and my confidence has taken a battering over the years, so I wasn’t sure what kind of impact I'd make."
The last few years have tested Paul's strength yet again. Tragically, just under three years ago, his younger brother lost his life to su***de. Only six weeks later, Paul also lost his dad—his hero.
"I’ve been through a lot, as have many people, especially over the last few years. But Slimming World has taught me that you have to make this journey yours. If you need to take the slower, scenic route, then so be it."
Paul is a strong believer in the power of the group support and stays to group every single week. He also knows that honesty pays off and the accountability of what you eat and drink is so important and that planning is key, making such a difference and he loves the tips and ideas he gets from group each week from his fellow members. And finally, "Ask for help, don't be shy, we are all in this together"
I couldn't be prouder of Paul for being so incredibly brave and sharing his story with us. Our Poppleton group is so lucky to have him. He is an inspiration, and his resilience proves that no matter how many times life knocks us down, we can keep moving forward.
Our doors are always open 💙
