How we can help...

Fatigue is extremely common during perimenopause and menopause, and are often compounded by disrupted sleep, night sweats, low mood, and the direct effects of declining oestrogen and progesterone.

The York Clinic takes a thorough approach to menopause-related fatigue, ruling out contributing conditions such as thyroid problems or anaemia and then addressing the hormonal root causes with a personalised treatment plan.

Many of our patients tell us that improved energy is one of the most transformative changes they experience after beginning treatment.

Let us help you feel energised and engaged in your life again

Had a wonderful time at the York Festival of Ideas, hearing Dame Kelly Holmes speak about living better through midlife and menopause.
In conversation with Elly Fiorentini, she shared honest and inspiring reflections that highlighted the importance of open discussions around these life changes and the support women need to navigate them confidently.

It was also lovely to see Kirsty Dixon, menopause educator, coach, and organiser of the York Menopause Cafe, whose work continues to help raise awareness, break down stigma, and create supportive spaces for conversations around menopause.

The benefits of Cold Water Swimming in Menopause 🧘🏻‍♀️

Menopause is a transformative phase in every woman’s life, bringing about significant physical, emotional, and hormonal changes.

Many women experience symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. While these changes can be challenging, natural interventions like cold water swimming have shown promise in alleviating some of these symptoms.

Let’s explore the science-backed benefits of taking the plunge during menopause.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Mood Regulation and Mental Health
🥵 Hot Flush Management
💤 Improved Sleep Quality
💪🏽 Physical Health Benefits
💃 Enhanced Resilience and Confidence
🫶🏽 Community and Connection

Getting Started: Tips for Safe Cold Water Swimming

🩱Start Gradually: Begin with brief immersions and gradually increase your time in the water as your body adapts.
🩱 Swim with a friend: Always swim with a friend or in a supervised area to ensure safety.
🩱 Dress Appropriately: A wetsuit or thermal swimwear can help ease the transition into colder waters.
🩱 Warm Up Safely: After swimming, warm up gradually with dry clothing and a warm drink—avoid hot showers immediately as they can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure.
🩱Listen to Your Body: If you feel dizzy or overly cold, exit the water immediately and seek warmth.

Final Thoughts

While menopause is a natural phase of life, its symptoms can feel overwhelming at times. Cold water swimming offers a natural, holistic approach to managing these challenges, backed by growing scientific research.

Beyond the physical and mental health benefits, the sheer joy of connecting with nature and embracing a new hobby can make this practice a transformative part of your menopause journey.

Dr Helen Bedford often addresses this commonly asked question.

No, at 35 you are not too young to be perimenopausal. Every woman is different, and the timing of this stage can vary widely for a range of reasons.

At the York Clinic, we assess each individual thoroughly before making a diagnosis or recommending treatment. Treatment options may include lifestyle advice, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - which comes in many forms - or a combination of both.

We would never dismiss a woman because of her age; instead, we take all symptoms seriously and tailor care to each person’s needs.

‼️ Employers need to wake up to the Menopause ‼️

The UK is changing. It feels like the whole country is starting to wake up to the fact that up to half the population at some point are going to experience menopause. We are starting to talk about how difficult this can be, at often a very challenging time of life. A woman may be faced with ageing relatives, a family to care for and all at a time when work pressure is often at it’s peak.

Nowhere are these discussions more important than in the workplace. Employers that turn a blind eye can make it impossible for women to continue. Women are reducing their hours (17%) and sometimes leaving their roles entirely (6-12%) because of their menopause. However, a workplace that supports women through menopause helps individuals to thrive. In turn, this rewards the organisation with greater retention of skilled and experienced people, reduces costs, as well as the gender pay gap.

🤍 Working together for better care

At The York Clinic, our service works alongside your GP to provide the time and specialist expertise to enhance your menopause care. Our advanced training enables us to create a tailored treatment plan focused on your individual needs, supporting both your immediate wellbeing and long-term vitality.

With your consent, we can share the details of your treatment plan with your GP and, if appropriate, recommend specific medication options. In some cases, your GP may be able to prescribe this medication for you.

As GPs ourselves, we understand the pressures and limitations of general practice. This service has been designed to complement existing NHS care and to improve the support available to women experiencing menopause across the UK.
