🌿 Sunday Reflection 🌿
I’ve been thinking about spirituality again this week.
The betrayal cracked me wide open and made me question everything—not just what had happened, but who I was within it.
Looking back over my life, I began to notice patterns. I had been giving far too much of myself away: my time, energy, understanding, forgiveness, and often my own needs.
I don’t say that with blame. It was simply a pattern I had to become curious about.
Why did I feel I had to give so much? What was I looking for? What was I afraid would happen if I said no? What beliefs was I carrying about being a “good” person?
And then came another uncomfortable question:
Were some of those beliefs even mine?
Because I’ve realised something.
I haven’t become less nice, kind, or compassionate. I haven’t closed my heart.
I’ve just stopped giving myself away.
Being nice can sometimes mean keeping the peace, avoiding conflict, or doing whatever keeps everyone else happy. Being kind can mean being honest, saying no, and holding a boundary—even when someone else doesn’t like it.
Some people might call that selfish because they no longer have access to the old version of me: the one who would over-give, over-explain, over-understand, and put herself last.
But my heart is still open. I can still care deeply. I’ve simply learned that compassion doesn’t mean abandoning yourself, kindness doesn’t mean having no boundaries, and loving people doesn’t mean carrying them.
For me, this is part of what spirituality has become—not just what I believe, but how I behave, respond, and treat myself and others.
It’s also something I carry into my work at The Relaxed Willow: creating a calm, welcoming space where people can pause, reconnect with themselves, and receive care without having to give anything in return.
I’m still learning and questioning. I don’t have all the answers. I simply know what it feels like to walk through the uncomfortable parts and discover things about yourself you didn’t know were there.
Life moves in cycles, just like the seasons. Autumn reminds us that letting go isn’t always an ending. Sometimes, it’s how we make space for new growth.
So today I’m wondering:
Where might you be giving too much of yourself away?
Have you confused being nice with keeping everyone else happy?
Could being kind sometimes mean being honest about what you can and cannot give?
What might you be ready to release this autumn?
And if someone calls you selfish because your boundaries have changed, could it simply be because they no longer have access to the old version of you?
No right answers.
Just something to sit with.
