🇸🇳 Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira released for medical treatment in Portugal 🇸🇳
Domingos Simões Pereira, the main opposition leader in Guinea-Bissau, has been released from detention and is traveling to Portugal for medical care. Pereira, who leads the PAIGC party, was initially imprisoned on the day of the November 26, 2025 coup that brought General Horta N’Tam to power, overthrowing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. He was later placed under house arrest before being re-detained on July 10. Military justice suspects Pereira of involvement in at least two coup attempts in late 2023 and October 2025, as well as economic offenses. Judicial and security sources confirmed his release, citing a medical assessment from the Sino-Guinean Military Hospital in Bissau which determined his illness could not be adequately treated locally. A judicial document stated that the decision to release him was based on humanitarian and legal grounds, as military doctors confirmed his condition. Pereira's lawyers and party have consistently denounced his detention as arbitrary and politically motivated, aimed at removing him from the presidential race scheduled for December 6. Guinea-Bissau, a West African nation, has experienced multiple coups and attempted coups since its independence from Portugal.
