PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE
(Oophoritis)
Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of a woman's womb(uterus),ovaries,or fallopian tubes .
CAUSES OF PID
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection caused by bacteria. When bacteria from the va**na or cervix travel to your womb, tubes, or ovaries it can cause an infection.
Most of the time, PID is caused by bacteria from Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. These are s*xually transmitted infections (STIs). Having unprotected s*x with someone who has an STI can cause PID.
NOTE: Bacteria can also enter your body during a medical procedure such as:
*Childbirth
*Endometrial biopsy(removing a small piece of lining of your womb to test for cancer)
*Getting an intrauterine device (IUD)
*Miscarriage
*Abortion
However, you are more likely to get PID if:
*You have a male s*x partner with gonorrhea or chlamydia
*You have s*x with many different people
*You have had an STI in the past
*You have recently had PID
*You have recently gotten an IUD
*You have had s*x before age 20
SYMPTOMS OF PID

You can have PID and not have any symptoms.Chlamydia can cause PID with no symptoms.Women who have an ectopic pregnancy or when infertile often have PID caused by chlamydia.
SELF-EXAMS and TESTS
Do a pelvic exam to look for:
1.Bleeding from your cervix(the opening to your uterus)
2.Fluid coming out of your cervix
3.Pain when your cervix is touched
4.Tenderness in your uterus,tubes,or ovaries
You may have lab tests to check for signs of infection :
*C-reactive protein (CRP)
*Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) WBC count.Etc.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
*A shot containing an Antibiotic.
*Antibiotic pills(take for up to 2weeks.
*You may be given antibiotics through a vein(IV).
*Your s*xual partner must be treated as well.
Possible Complications:
PID infections can cause scarring of the pelvic organs. This can cause:
-Chronic pelvic pain
-Ectopic pregnancy
-Infertility
PREVENTION
*Get prompt treatment for STIs.
*Practice safe s*x.
*Abstinence.
*Have a s*xual relationship with only one person(monogamous)
