Nuku Studio is a Ghana based organisation established by photographer Nii Obodai. Nuku Studio builds on more than two decades of experience in photography practice from a growing network of photographers and creative institutions, worldwide. Through commissions, collaborations and partnerships, Nuku Studio’s core mission is to develop solutions that support photography as an artistic practice, as

Nuku Studio wishes you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We are back from our break and want to invite you to visit our current exhibition “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” at Nuku Studio - Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale.

In “Infinite Wardrobe”, Gideon Asmah explores the relationship between a fishing town and the influence of secondhand clothing. Moses Adjei links secondhand garments with traditional Kente and Fugu cloth. In “Colorful Anthropocene”, Austin Nortey reanimates discarded textiles through carefully constructed compositions. “Thread of Us” by Littlebigesi invites reflection and rest, encouraging a slowing down of the fast fashion cycle and a renewed attention to recycling and value.

The exhibition will be on display until March 2026 and we are happy to welcome you during our opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday 11 am-6 pm! If you have already visited, we invite you to share your thoughts in the comments.

Nuku Studio wishes you HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

As the year comes to a close, we would like to thank everyone who visited our exhibitions in Accra and Tamale in 2025, as well as those who took part in the conversations, talks, and discussions—both offline and online. Our thanks also go to our artists, collaborators, partners, and sponsors for their continued support and trust.

We wish everyone a restful holiday period, with time to pause and recharge before the new year begins with renewed energy.

Nuku Studio will be on break from December 24th to January 3rd. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

One week has already passed since the opening of our exhibition Charting New Routes of Rebellion at Nuku Studio - Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us for the opening and for the conversations the exhibition has sparked, both in the space and online within our .

On view until March 2026, the exhibition presents works by four Ghanaian artists: Gideon Asmah, Moses Adjei, Austin Nortey, and Littlebigesi.

Only three more days until the exhibition “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” is opening at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale!

And we have one more artist for you to meet!

Meet Moses Adjei!

Moses Adjei is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice draws from autobiography and street culture to explore the intersections of personal memory, urban life, and identity.

As the bales were opened it seemed like the clothes were just spilling uncontrollably out of the straps that kept the bales compact. A large chaos unfolded on the floor of Nuku Studio. But it didn’t take long that Moses showed us a pattern we all were able to recognised and which distracted us from the chaos and made us see something new.

In his own word his “aim was to transform these fabrics into a language of connection creating something the community can relate to, engage with, and see themselves reflected in.”

We’re getting closer to the exhibition opening of “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” on December 13th, 3 pm at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale.

Today, we’d like you to meet Littlebigesi!

Littlebigesi is a textile artist and a fashion designer.

One of the first things she noticed in Tamale were the people. Not surprising as she says that “I love observing the human interaction with others and their environment.”

Her whole work is inspired and centered around human interaction. Without spoiling anything we can let you know that her work is something you can touch, feel and get comfortable with.

One interesting thing is: Littlebigesi carries her tools wherever she goes: Her hands! Her large installation is completely hand crocheted charging every piece of fabric with meaning.

Very soon you will see for yourself Littlebigesi’s work and we’d then love to hear what you think!

Our next exhibition “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” is coming up! The opening will be on December 13th at 3 pm at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale.

And to make the wait worth while, we like to introduce each artist.

Today, meet Gideon Asmah!

Gideon Asmah is a visual artist, with a background in photography and film making.

In his own words he says that “the process of up-cycling is very similar to documentary film making. Gather the material; draw out the story.” At one point during his process, he started organizing the textiles according to color and later layer them out across the wall covering it from the bottom to the top.

Seeing them all displayed on the wall it makes one wonder what’s the story behind each piece that was stacked in the bale? How does it connect to ourselves?

We suppose there’s no one straightforward answer to these questions… so it continues to be a process and we’d like to hear what you think - let us know in the comments or when we meet at the opening!

Prior to the upcoming exhibition “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” opening on December 13th, 3 pm at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale, we like to introduce each artist.

Meet Austin Nortey!

He is a multidisciplinary artist who works with different media: performance, installations, sculpture, painting, designing and textiles, which are the foundation of his practice.

He pays close attention to detail, transforms the ordinary to something exciting which doesn’t just show from outside but transfers a unique feel for the one wearing his design.

When talking about his process he shares with us the following: “Materials that I work with control me and I love them to control me. So even though I’ll have my design, When I feel that the material is bending itself in this direction, I am free to move with it.”

Nuku Studio is excited to open the exhibition “Charting New Routes of Rebellion” on Saturday, December 13th at 3 pm at its Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale!

Your memory might be a little dusty, but in our heads it feels like yesterday when we think about last year’s art residency. Four artists - Gideon Asmah, Moses Adjei, Austin Nortey and Littlebigesi - braved the challenge to experiment with and transform 8 textile bales (each weighing 55kg making a total of 440kg of secondhand clothing) into new bodies of work. The textile bales were part of our previous exhibition “Routes of Rebellion” by Jesse Weaver Shipley at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale in 2023/24.

What started with a getting lost in the overwhelming amount of second hand clothing underwent a process of brainstorming ideas, cutting, stitching, pulling, folding until new works emerged. Now, one year later it’s time to show the world!

Be ready to immerse yourself into a new exhibition and to learn, touch, feel and engage with the artist’s work!

This past week, the Ummy Relief Foundation, in collaboration with students from Kalpohini SHS and Northern School of Business, held a Plastic Arts Painting workshop at Nuku Studio – Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale.

This workshop is part of the Eco Plastic Week 2025 led by Alhassan Salifu Suale.

The event showcased student artworks that creatively tackled the issue of plastic pollution. It was inspiring to see how participants used painting not only as a form of expression but as a call to action for a cleaner, more sustainable Ghana.

is based in Tamale and aims to engage young minds in environmental topics such as plastic pollution through visual art in the northern region of Ghana.
