President Mahama Commissions PET-CT and Linear Accelerator Facilities at Sweden Ghana Medical Centre
A major milestone in Ghana’s healthcare advancement was marked on Wednesday, 13th May 2026, as H.E. President John Dramani Mahama commissioned a state-of-the-art Nuclear Medicine Facility at Sweden Ghana Medical Centre in Accra.
The newly commissioned facility, the first of its kind in West Africa and the 80th in the world, features a cutting-edge PET-CT Scanner, Cyclotron, and the Elekta Infinity Version Linear Accelerator — transforming cancer diagnosis and precision treatment in Ghana.
Under the theme “Advancing Precision in Cancer Treatment,” the event brought together distinguished government officials, healthcare leaders, and members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
In his welcome address, CEO Dr. Clement Egyin Edusa described the occasion as “a historic day for the healthcare future of Ghana and the West African sub-region,” emphasizing that early diagnosis improves treatment outcomes, reduces suffering, lowers healthcare costs, and eliminates the need for patients to travel abroad for care.
President Mahama described the commissioning as a major milestone toward medical sovereignty, noting that the facility will strengthen Ghana’s capacity for early cancer detection, faster diagnosis, and improved treatment outcomes while positioning the country as a future medical hub for West Africa.
He commended the visionary leadership of GNAT and the management of Sweden Ghana Medical Centre for their commitment to delivering world-class healthcare infrastructure and accessible quality medical care.
This historic achievement represents a bold step forward in redefining cancer care in Ghana — advancing precision, restoring hope, and placing Ghana firmly on the global map of healthcare excellence.
