Dialysis is a medical treatment that performs the vital functions of the kidneys when they can no longer work properly. It removes waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood, helping to balance essential minerals like potassium and sodium.
There are two main types of dialysis:
1. Hemodialysis – blood is filtered through a machine outside the body.
2. Peritoneal dialysis – uses the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) and a cleansing fluid to filter blood inside the body.
Dialysis may be temporary in cases of acute kidney failure or lifelong for people with end-stage kidney disease, unless a kidney transplant becomes possible.
