The President of Ghana and Honorable Lawmakers,
I, (PSJS), write to you on behalf of the entire Lobi-Birifor tribe, bringing to your attention a distressing situation involving the late Grandpa, the late Lawmaker Truomah Bayele, who dedicated his service to addressing human rights abuses and slavery-like conditions affecting our people in the Sawla Tuna Kalba constituency and Bole enclave.
His commitment to this cause led to his untimely passing, and subsequently, his family faced obstacles in giving him a dignified burial. Despite court orders, the Savannah Regional Security Council, led by the regional minister, disregarded the family's wishes, refusing to release his body for funeral proceedings.
This action raises concerns about the rule of law and the protection of minority rights in the Savannah Region. As you, Mr. President, have advocated for reparations for historical slavery, it's notable that similar injustices persist in our region.
Mr. President, we, the Lobi-Birifor people, are not strangers; we are citizens deserving of equal treatment and protection. We are indigenous and original inhabitants of the then Northwestern part of what is now Ghana. Historical accounts indicate that the Gonja people migrated from Burkina Faso and encountered our ancestors in this region.
Given this context, we urge you to treat our people with the dignity and respect we deserve. You previously praised Ibrahim Trueweri as a good man and a friend; we implore you to extend similar consideration to our people and region.
The situation suggests potential misuse of power by appointed officials, which may be exacerbating insecurity and oppression in our area. The silence from the government and parliament on this issue is troubling.
We urge you to look into this matter and ensure justice is served for the late Lawmaker Truomah Bayele and his family, and for the entire Lobi-Birifor tribe.
Sincerely,
PROF SHARIF JONORTEY SAMUEL (PSJS)
