NEW STUDY HIGHLIGHTS THE DANGERS OF ABUSING YOUR BODY AND OVERLOOKING HEALTH, IN ELITE EXTREME SPORTS

A recent retrospective cohort study conducted by researchers at Macquarie University, Australia, has revealed a concerning trend on the lifespan of 1,012 male and female professional wrestlers (1953–2024) who were associated with the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and its predecessor organisations.

FINDINGS
The findings suggested that professional wrestlers tend to die nearly three years earlier than individuals of the same age and s*x in the general population, providing valuable insights into the health outcomes of individuals engaged in professional wrestling.

The the longevity shortcomings, were mostly driven by:

- Cardiovascular disease
- Drug overdoses
- Su***de
- Neurodegenerative disease

Additionally, obesity increased mortality risk by 212%, whereas a high match workload (wrestling events) increased it by 71%.

BODYBUILDERS
In support of this worrying trend of adverse health outcomes in elite athletes engaged in extreme sports, was a study I posted and discussed back in May 2025, which suggested that professional male bodybuilders have 5-fold higher risk of sudden cardiac death than amateurs You can read more about it here https://www.facebook.com/share/18vdV2ZYDm/?mibextid=wwXIfr

THE SOLUTION
My integrative Sports Nutrition (ISN) programme is specially indicated to provide that crucial balance between optimising nutrition and lifestyle in recreational and elite athletes, whilst optimising performance, recovery and overall health in a personalised manner.

By running a series of biochemical and genetic tests, dietary and lifestyle analyses, ISN can help identify subtle indicators / trends of ill-health that could potentially help prevent a wide range other than metabolic complications in the short and long-term, months and even years before symptoms and clinical manifestations occur, sometimes working in collab with other more specialised healthcare professionals.

LOW VITAMIN D DESPITE SUMMER SUN?

New research by Newcastle University's Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition involving UK adults aged 65 and over, which included people from ethnic backgrounds of all ages, suggests that many people could be living with low vitamin D all year round without realizing it.

Analysis revealed that vitamin D insufficiency was widespread across groups as more than half of older adults were affected, while rates were even higher among minoritized ethnic participants.

Crucially, vitamin D insufficiency rates did not improve during the summer months, challenging the common belief that increased sunlight alone is enough to restore healthy levels. This mirrors what I am seeing with many clients when assessing their blood Vitamin D levels, even during the summer months.

The research may have implications for immune and bone health, general well-being and longer-term health risks, challenging the belief that summer sunlight is enough to restore them.

The key is to test not guess. Arrange a private blood test with me, which includes Vitamin D as well as other key biomarkers can succinctly inform what your current levels are and establish a rationale for how much you need to supplement together with optimising your diet.

EATING KIWI FRUIT MAY SIGNIFICANTLY HELP PROTECT AND REPAIR HUMAN DNA, AS WELL AS REDUCE OXIDATIVE DAMAGE LINKED TO CANCERS.

Research suggests that eating just 1 kiwi fruit per day may help enhance DNA repair mechanisms and reduce existing oxidative DNA damage.

Kiwi appears to provide dual protection against oxidative stress. Firstly, it supports the body’s antioxidant defence systems, helping to reduce the formation of oxidative damage and improve antioxidant status. Secondly, kiwi has been shown to stimulate the Base Excision Repair (BER) pathway, particularly the repair and removal of 8-oxoguanine, one of the most common and potentially mutagenic forms of oxidative DNA damage.

These effects may help reduce the accumulation of DNA mutations associated with ageing and cancer risk. Importantly, this benefit does not appear to come from a single nutrient alone, but rather from the synergy of kiwi’s whole-food matrix. Vitamin C, polyphenols, flavonoids, fibre, and other bioactive compounds appear to work together to produce these protective effects.

8-oxoguanine is a recognised marker of oxidative DNA damage and has been strongly associated with increased cancer risk. It is one of the urinary metabolites I frequently assess within Organic Acid Testing (OAT), which I may request for some clients as part of a broader functional health assessment and personalised intervention strategy.

OAT testing can also provide insight into metabolic function, oxidative stress, mitochondrial health, nutrient needs, neurotransmitter balance, detoxification capacity, and possible organ system weaknesses.

AVOID DISPOSABLE CUPS FOR TEA / COFFEE

Limiting your micro & nano plastic exposure has become critical to optimise health and reduce the risks of various preventable chronic diseases, such as obesity, cancer, neurodegeneration and other metabolic outcomes. Plenty of research on this.

Studies show hot beverages poured in to disposable plastic cups releases billions of micro & nano plastic particles which are readily absorbed and may deposit on various tissues and organs.

One simple way to achieve this, is to avoid styrofoam or other plastic disposable cups when ordering hot beverages on the go, and switch to small steel cups like this one - I always have a small one in my backpack, and another in my car. The plastic top is insignificant as I dont drink through it.

Those close to me know my habits, although usually not a problem as most places I go serve either ceramic or glass cups. My clients are all fully aware of this. A small inconvenience that can go a long way to improve your health.
