Signs of anxiety in autistic children and teens, but also adults,
Anxiety can present in various ways across an autistic person's life. Recognising and understanding the source of someone's anxiety is one of the first things you can do to help support those around you.
Signs can include but are not limited to:
• Aggression and anger
• Increased restricted and/or repetitive behaviours
• Decrease use of body language
• Reduced looking at people's faces
• Monotonous voice
• 'naughty' or defiant behaviour
• Trying to control others around them
• Becoming quiet or submissive
• Increase in the need for ritualistic behaviours
• Situational or Selective mutism
Were you aware of some of these signs of anxiety?
Unfortunately, anxiety is extremely high in the autistic community; for some individuals, their anxiety can be so debilitating that daily functioning is impaired. In some cases, helping to support the individual by developing greater understanding, creating an autistic-friendly environment, and allowing the person to be their true authentic self are some first steps to help support the person around you.
