Shishiguchi （獅子口）
This is exclusively used in «Shakkyō», a fifth-group play (gobanme-mono) that has a demon or a goblin for its leading character. The scene of «Shakkyō» is China. In the play, the Japanese priest Jakushō sees a lion dancing on a stone bridge, which leads to another world, the Pure Land. It is a play of a good omen for expelling evil spirits. The piece is sometimes performed to show the progress of leading actors. The majestic appearance of Buddha preaching the truth is traditionally referred to as Shishi-ku (a roar of a lion) because the face is compared to that of a roaring lion. The mask manifests Buddha’s appearance, and seems to have the power of exorcism in the highly forcible and impressive looks. Depending on the school, masks with different expressions are used.

Monkeys (猿) are believed to be demon quellers - the word for monkey, saru, also means expel when different kanji is used. Their effigies are placed at temple entrances as well as foxes, to ward away the presence of evil.

The three hear, see, do no evil monkey are also a fixture in Japanese folklore and have the power to ward off evil. The number three often comes into play with monkey lore – 3 monkeys, three worm yokai story etc.

Sarugami (Monkey Spirit) - The monkey spirit and messenger of the gods. His servants are the three wise monkeys (see, say, hear no evil). Monkeys mirror humans in passions and characteristics – they are calculating and intelligent but incredibly playful and pleasure-seeking. Mischievous and vain as well.

Fudō （不動）

This mask portrays Fudō-myōō, or the God of Fire, who repulses demons by order of Dainichi Buddha, or Mahavairocana. There is an interesting legend surrounding a certain mask of Fudō. The legend is that when an actor used a mask made from the head of the statue of Fudō-myōō, he was visited with retribution and could not take the mask off. We could even see the flame behind the deity in the terrifying expression of anger. The tense features of the face, including the curly hair carefully engraved from a single piece of wood, as well as the uniqueness of its colour, closely describe the fierce appearance of the deity.

A walk through our space, and unique gems inside.

Name: Hashihime （橋姫）

Mask of a woman transformed into a demon after being heartbroken over the lost love of her husband. The hashihime mask is full of anger and sadness expressed in the deeply furrowed brow. The broad, open mouth and exposed gold teeth appear ready to let forth a curse, and the gold outline of the eyes indicate that the woman has already transformed into a demon. As with the deigan and ryū-nyo masks, the hashihime mask is used by the ryū-nyo, with the strong expression portraying the austere nature of the character.
