A cleanser, a serum and a cream are not three versions of the same product.

They are three different jobs. The cleanser prepares the surface, because active ingredients applied over residue and sunscreen never reach the layer they were made for.

The serum carries: it holds those actives in a form fine enough to travel past the stratum corneum. The cream closes the sequence, locking water in and returning to the barrier the lipids it needs to stay intact.

What makes this a system rather than a shelf of products is that the three are formulated to work in sequence, not to compete for the same layer. Skipping one does not simplify the routine, it removes a step the next one was counting on.

Retinoids accelerate epidermal turnover and support collagen: in a controlled trial, 0.4% retinol significantly reduced fine wrinkles in naturally aged skin and raised procollagen (Kafi et al., Archives of Dermatology, 2007).

But at the wrong concentration, or without preparing the skin barrier, skin reacts with flaking and stinging, because it is not yet ready for it.

Daily scrubbing disrupts the skin barrier, and the barrier does not rebuild instantly: once disrupted, it can take up to three or four days to fully recover, and that recovery slows with age (Fluhr et al., 2002).
