Clarito!

Auto-immune disorders

Addison’s disease, or autoimmune adrenalitis, is a condition where your body’s immune system attacks your own adrenal glands – a pair of small glands that sit on top of the kidneys.
This condition is pretty rare and can be life-threatening in emergencies. It causes a drop in hormones like cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens, due to the damage of both adrenal glands.
Addison’s disease typically shows up progressively as a deficiency in glucocorticoid hormones, followed by mineralocorticoid.
Addison’s disease is quite rare, affecting only .6 out of every 100,000 people each year. At any given time, the number of people with this disease ranges from 4 to 11 per 100,000 people.
The most frequent type of Addison’s disease is the autoimmune type, which can be associated with other autoimmune conditions.

*Type I diabetes
*Hypoparathyroidism
*Hypopituitarism
*Pernicious anemia
*Graves’ disease
*Chronic thyroiditis
*Dermatitis herpetiformis
*Vitiligo
*Myasthenia gravis

Management

* Lifelong hormone replacement:
* Hydrocortisone/prednisolone
* Fludrocortisone
* Treat underlying cause
* Increase steroid dose during stress/illness

Fertility?

Nearly a century ago, two surgeons cut open a woman's ovaries, saw something they didn't recognize, and gave it a name that sent medicine looking in the wrong place for ninety years. They called it polycystic o***y syndrome. That name pointed everyone at the ovaries while the real engine of the disease sat somewhere nobody thought to look.

Here's the picture I see all the time. A woman gets told she has PCOS in her twenties, deals with the fertility piece, and assumes it faded once she stopped trying to conceive. Now she's 52 with prediabetes, fatty liver, and sleep apnea, and I'm the first person in thirty years to connect all of it back to PCOS. She thought it was behind her. It was ahead of her the whole time.

The "cysts" were never the cause. The engine is metabolic. Excess insulin pushes the ovaries to overproduce testosterone, and the whole cycle feeds itself. This year a global consortium finally renamed it polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, putting the metabolism where it belongs.

My full article explains what the wrong name cost, the screening you've probably never been offered, and how to act on it now.

Read it below 👇️

Share this with a woman who was told her PCOS was just a fertility issue.
