Shingles Vaccination May Cut Dementia Risk
Vaccination has long been a cornerstone of public health, traditionally focused on preventing infectious diseases and reducing child mortality, and more recently on cancer prevention. Now, growing evidence suggests vaccines may offer unexpected benefits beyond infection control. One emerging area of interest is the potential link between shingles (herpes zoster, HZ) vaccination and reduced dementia risk.
Shingles primarily affects older adults and immunocompromised individuals and involves the nervous system. Research using mouse and human tissue models has linked herpesviruses to biological processes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, including amyloid‑beta production, tau phosphorylation, and neuroinflammation. While these responses may initially protect against infection, they can become harmful when viral infections persist over time—raising the possibility that preventing shingles could reduce long‑term neurological consequences.
A recent study by Pomirchy et al. (2026) adds important evidence. Using a natural experiment in Canada, the researchers examined dementia onset among people eligible and ineligible for live, attenuated HZ vaccination. Over follow‑up, 4.3% of vaccine‑eligible individuals developed dementia compared with 5.3% of those ineligible, translating to an absolute reduction of 2.0 percentage points. Rigorous analyses found no detectable bias, and the protective association remained even after adjusting for multiple baseline health conditions.
As Hong Kong evaluates the cost‑effectiveness and public role of shingles vaccination, these findings invite a broader view of immunisation—one that considers how vaccines may help influence the trajectory of chronic diseases such as dementia, not just prevent acute infections.

Cognitive Reserve: Your Brain's Resilience Across the Lifespan
Cognitive reserve reflects the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt, compensate, and find alternative pathways in the face of aging, stress, or disease. Individuals with higher cognitive reserve can continue to function well—even when significant neurodegenerative changes are present—helping delay or lessen the clinical impact of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological disorders.
First identified in the late 1980s through neuropathological research, cognitive reserve has since become a cornerstone concept in brain health and preventive neurology. Growing scientific evidence shows that cognitive reserve is not fixed—it can be built and strengthened across the lifespan. Everyday lifestyle behaviours play a powerful role, including healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, quality sleep, effective stress management, meaningful social connections, and ongoing intellectual stimulation.
This body of research highlights six key lifestyle interventions, identified by Harvard Medical School, that together support long-term cognitive fitness and resilience. These habits don’t just protect against disease; they enhance mental flexibility, independence, and quality of life.
For healthcare professionals, understanding cognitive reserve offers a valuable, non‑pharmacological framework for patient counselling. By translating these principles into practical guidance, clinicians can empower individuals to actively invest in their brain health—building resilience today that lasts well into the future.

The World Kidney Day 2026: Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet

World Kidney Day 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of a global movement committed to improving kidney health worldwide. This milestone year carries a powerful theme: “Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.” It reminds us that human health and environmental sustainability are deeply connected.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) now affects nearly one in ten people globally, with rates rising due to factors such as environmental pollution, climate change, and unequal access to healthcare. At the same time, kidney care itself—particularly dialysis—consumes large amounts of water, energy, and materials, contributing to healthcare’s carbon footprint. Addressing kidney health therefore means not only caring for patients, but also rethinking how care is delivered.
The World Kidney Day 2026 FOCUS highlights the global burden of kidney disease, the growing impact of environmental stressors on kidney health, and the environmental footprint of current kidney care practices. Importantly, it also showcases emerging strategies for more sustainable, people‑centred kidney health systems—approaches that protect patients while safeguarding our planet.
As we mark 20 years of progress, World Kidney Day 2026 is a call to action for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities to work together. By caring for people and protecting the planet, we can ensure kidney health for all—now and for future generations.

In our Feature Story, we explore how lipid management for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention is entering a transformative phase. Two converging trends are reshaping the field: earlier intervention—guided by the principle “the earlier, the better”—and broader strategies that address residual risk beyond low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Together, these approaches signal a more proactive and comprehensive era in cardiovascular health.
