Xiangjiang (Hong Kong) Heritage of Northern Swordsmanship – Qingfeng Sword

The Qingfeng Sword belongs to the Luohan Men (Arhat Gate) sword style, pursuing the principle found in martial arts sayings: “The sword travels green, the blade travels black.”
The “green” in “the sword travels green” refers to the swiftness of “a flash of green light.” Its edge is sharp and compelling, seizing the opponent’s momentum, as fast as a flash of green light.

The “Qingfeng Sword” introduced in this film was transmitted by Mr. Sun Yufeng, a renowned martial artist of the late Qing and early Republic era who was famous throughout the Yangtze River region and held the honorific title “Sword King of Seven Provinces.”

Sun Yufeng studied under Shaolin Yuantong Zen Master, hence his martial arts system is called “Luohan Men.”

In 1918, Sun taught at the Shanghai Jingwu Athletic Association, and in 1923, he moved south to teach at the Guangdong Jingwu Athletic Association, facilitating the transmission of northern techniques to the south.

Mr. Sun had many students, with notable disciples including Shao Hansheng, Huang Xiaoxia, Shi Jian, Li Xunping, and others.

Our association also preserves another sword style named “Qingfeng Sword” (with different Chinese characters: 清風劍 vs. 青鋒劍). Although they share the same pronunciation, their sword forms are completely different. It belongs to the Wudang sword system, and the two should not be confused. We will have the opportunity to share more about this in the future.

The “Eight Major Stances” of Seven-Star Praying Mantis refer to eight fundamental stepping structures (also known as the Eight Horse Stances or the Eight Ape Steps). They form a core foundation of Northern Praying Mantis boxing and are often regarded together with the “Twelve-Character Formula” as essential training principles.
However, many practitioners today misunderstand the concept of the Eight Major Stances. Some mistakenly believe that a “central stance” is included, while others separate “Tun Ta Stance” and “Pu Bu Stance” into two distinct categories. In traditional teaching, the Eight Major Stances are defined as the following:
1. Horse-Riding Stance
2. Mountain-Climbing Stance
3. Entering-Circle Stance
4. Tiger-Crossing Stance
5. Lifting Step Stance
6. Tun Ta (Collapsing/Absorbing) Stance
7. Jade Ring Stance
8. Seven-Star Stance
Each of these stances embodies specific principles of body mechanics and footwork. Together, they form the structural foundation of movement in Seven-Star Praying Mantis boxing. A correct understanding and mastery of these eight stances are essential for grasping forms, transitions, and the generation of power.
