The possible routes of transmission of rat HEV to humans include ingestion of food or water contaminated by rodents or their excreta, exposure to environments or objects contaminated by rodents or their excreta and direct contact with rodents or their excreta.

The infection is potentially life-threatening. You are thus encouraged to pay attention to personal, food and environmental hygiene.

WHY ARE MY FEET AND ANKLES SWOLLEN?

This question is commonly raised by patients coming to our clinic. Obviously, there are multiple causes. Our doctor has to do a proper medical assessment that may sometimes require lab tests to find out the exact cause.

From our experience, common causes seen in FDHs are side effect of amlodipine (a blood pressure medicine), overweight with prolonged standing, varicose veins and high-sodium (salt) diet.

However, you have to seek medical consultation promptly if:

1. the swelling is sudden in onset.

2. Only one leg is swollen.

3. there are other symptoms e.g. chest pain, shortness of breath or reduced urine output.

All these features suggest a more serious and even life-threatening diagnosis.

If in doubt, talk to your doctor.

UTI AND CANCER RISK

UTI (urinary tract infection) is a common reason of doctor consultation in women.

If you are suffering from recurrent UTI - defined as 2 or more infections in 6 months or 3 infections in a year, the cause is usually due to re-entry of the E. Coli bacteria to your bladder.

However, if the number of recurrent UTI is 5 or more in 6 months, your risk of having an underlying bladder cancer is 2.5 times higher than the average women.

Therefore, if you have symptoms suggestive of UTI, do not try self-treatment. The diagnosis has to be assessed by a healthcare professional.

YOU ARE EATING LESS BUT YOU ARE NOT LOSING WEIGHT

We often come across overweight patients who attempted to lose weight by eating less e.g. omitting breakfast or cutting a bowl of rice. Yet, their weight remains unchanged. Why?

1. You are too stressed by the body weight issue. Too much stress increases the release of the hormone, cortisol which would increase your appetite and stimulate fat storage.

2. Your body has adapted to the ‘starvation’ and slow down the metabolic rate. Thus, less energy is consumed.

3. You eat less but you consume other high-calorie food e.g. salad dressing, sugary drinks.

If you do not think any of the above contributes to the failure in losing weight, talk to a health professional.

CANCER RATES ARE RISING IN YOUNG WOMEN

A recently released report found that cancer has been becoming more common in young people, in particular women. They account for two-thirds of all cancers diagnosed in people under 50.

The causes behind the rise are complex – lifestyle changes, environmental factors, policies. Before more is known about the etiologies of cancers, taking REGULAR SCREENING is one of the most worthwhile actions you should take.
