Perhaps in the eyes of others, a tattoo is simply a matter of good or bad; but to the person wearing it, it carries their experiences and memories.
My client saw a stranger wearing a copy of his sleeve in person yesterday and sent me these photos, though the difference in detail and quality was clear at a glance, it still felt quite bittersweet. This isn’t the first time my work has been copied, and while I can try to comfort myself by calling it “a twisted form of appreciation,” the truth is that every original design is poured over through conversations with my client, blending their stories and my ideas told through my vision.
What makes it completely ridiculous is that even my client’s company logo got copied as well (looking on the bright side, I guess that’s free lifetime advertising for my client?)
The path of creating custom art isn’t easy, neither is honing the skills or experience throughout my career. Thank you to the copier for thinking so highly of my work, but I truly hope that everyone in this industry can learn to respect one another and respect every client who puts their trust in a tattoo artist. 🙌
