The Parkinzone Association, in collaboration with the โ€œGabriele dโ€™Annunzioโ€ University of Chietiโ€“Pescara, offers online Taijiquan classes once a week to patients affected by Parkinsonโ€™s disease: a regular appointment dedicated to caring for the body and nurturing mental well-being.

Taijiquan is a discipline that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing, creating a natural harmony between body and mind.
This practice provides a holistic experience, promoting both physical and emotional well-being.
Several studies have shown that Taijiquan is effective in improving balance, postural stability, and coordination, helping to reduce the risk of falls.
Through slow, controlled, and balancing movements, Taijiquan enhances proprioception and body awareness in space, helping people feel more confident in their everyday movements.

The Direรงรฃo-Geral da Saรบde, in Portugal, has launched the "Manual on Adapted Physical Activity for People with Parkinsonโ€™s Disease", an important resource that brings together scientific evidence and practical guidance for professionals, people living with Parkinsonโ€™s and caregivers.

We would like to highlight the contribution of Ju Domingos and Catarina Godinho, both team members of the MOVE ON UP project, as authors of this manual. Their work has been essential in shaping a document that is rigorous, accessible and truly people-centred.

We encourage the reading and sharing of this manual, which represents a meaningful step towards more informed and inclusive practices in adapted physical activity for Parkinsonโ€™s.

Medication plays a crucial role in managing Parkinsonโ€™s, but it is not the whole answer. Increasing scientific evidence shows that non-pharmacological, non-surgical approaches are essential in addressing both motor and non-motor symptoms, supporting quality of life, and slowing functional decline.

Recent data highlights the impact of approaches such as structured exercise, cognitive stimulation, and behavioural strategies in challenges like gait freezing, postural instability, falls, transfers, fatigue, sleep, cognition, and anxiety. At the same time, current gold-standard medication has limitations and does not fully address the broad range of symptoms experienced by people living with Parkinsonโ€™s.

In other words, evidence points clearly in one direction:

Not because medication is not important, but because a comprehensive approach is. For gait, balance, mobility, posture, endurance, anxiety, sleep, cognition, and overall disease management, regular and targeted exercise plays a proven therapeutic role.

The Move On Up programme embraces this evidence by empowering the Parkinson community with accessible, structured, research-based exercise and education.

Because sometimes the most powerful treatment is movement itself.

For people living with Parkinsonโ€™s, exercise is one of the most powerful tools โ€” and the best results come from balancing different types of training.

According to the Parkinsonโ€™s Foundation, an effective routine should include:

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐€๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐›๐ข๐œ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž - 3 days per week, with at least 30 minutes of continuous or intermittent activity (like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming).

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  - 2 to 3 days per week, 10 to 15 repetitions, with special focus on extensor muscles.
