A recent analysis of population-based data from England has demonstrated the profound protective effect of human papillomavirus vaccination when administered in early adolescence.

Researchers examined cervical cancer mortality records spanning 2001 to 2024 among women aged 20 to 34 years and linked these figures to vaccination coverage by birth cohort following the introduction of the national programme in 2008.

Girls offered the vaccine at ages 12 to 13 achieved high uptake of approximately 88 to 90 percent. In the cohort of women aged 20 to 24 years between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded, whereas historical rates predicted roughly 23 deaths in the absence of vaccination, equating to a complete reduction in mortality.

Similar near-total protection extended to those reaching ages 25 to 29, while modest residual risk remained among older groups vaccinated later. Overall, the programme is estimated to have prevented nearly 200 deaths by the end of 2024.

These observations indicate that vaccination prior to potential exposure essentially eliminates the chance of dying from cervical cancer before age 30. The findings underscore the value of sustaining high coverage among adolescents to maintain this extraordinary public-health gain and advance the global goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a major cause of premature mortality.
