This is a sharing from mid gnosis, from something I’m deeply fascinated by and currently sitting with. I first encountered Umbanda, and with it Exu, as a force of nature that governs crossroads, timing, movement, communication, and consequence. Not a person, not good or evil, but something relational, something that responds to respect so roads remain open. Later, being in Bali, I was deeply touched by how offerings are made daily, not as performance or ceremony, but as a natural way of relating to life. In Balinese cosmology, Bhuta Kala refers to forces of hunger, chaos, and time, understood not as monsters or gods, but as elemental forces that are acknowledged and appeased so balance is maintained and nothing needs to take. Different names, different cultures, but the same threshold intelligence appears, one that feels often misunderstood through a Western lens. For me, both experiences felt less like learning something new and more like remembering a way of relating to the world that already lived somewhere deep in the body
