One of the biggest things I notice for my clients experiencing ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, Long Covid, burnout, anxiety, chronic pain and other persistent symptoms is how strongly perfectionism can show up during recovery. People are often thinking:
âI need to be doing everything perfectly to recover"
"I need to read more books and learn more in order to recover"
âI need to get better quickly.â
âI should be further along by now.â
And so the people who have often spent years before they got sick living under a lot of pressure, striving, pushing, and trying to get everything right⌠continues to experience more pressure!
This is something I actively work with in sessions. The tools, conversations and exploration we do in sessions is so valuable. But the energy we bring to them matters most.
If recovery becomes another project to optimise, another performance to perfect, or another high standard to meet, we can unintentionally keep repeating the same pattern in a different form. In sessions we work towards noticing when perfectionism is showing up, and gently starting to create a space for new habits, lovely new neural pathways to develop and new ways of engaging with the fear that is underlying the perfectionism. We bring in more compassion, more curiosity and more permission to be human! My hope is that in our sessions we will support you in building a relationship with yourself that feels safer, kinder, and more sustainable than the one that existed before.
The most important thing to remember is that your body and your emotional brain does not need you to be perfect or for everything to be perfect in order to recover.
đ¸If this resonates with you, and you'd like not just tools, and conversations that uncover the root of your symptoms, but someone also holding up a compassionate mirror and celebrating you, I'd love to hear from you! You can get in touch via email or book a free 30 minute consultation at the link in my bio.
Thanks for being here,
