Don’t let this fruit mess with your medication.
Grapefruit blocks an enzyme in your gut that breaks down some drugs before they reach your bloodstream. With that enzyme blocked, more of the drug gets absorbed than your dose was meant to deliver, so your body ends up with levels closer to an overdose, even though you only took the normal amount.
This matters most for medications like certain statins (simvastatin and atorvastatin), some blood pressure tablets, and a handful of other prescription drugs.
If you take regular medication and enjoy grapefruit or its juice, check with your pharmacist or GP to see if it’s safe for you. Some drugs are fine, plenty aren’t.
