Proposed EU Maximum Permitted Levels for vitamins and minerals could force sharp reductions in supplement dosages, including Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Vitamin B6. Leaving many products at strengths too low to be of practical benefit to consumers.

The proposed "harmonisation" takes no account of differing geographical needs. Irish people require higher levels of certain vitamins particularly Vitamin D, than some other EU member states.

Starting exams this week? Your brain needs fuel, not just caffeine and stress.

What you eat during exam season can have a real impact on your concentration, memory, mood and energy levels throughout the day.

🧠 Focus on balanced meals and snacks
Try to include protein, fibre and healthy fats to support steady energy and concentration. Think oats, eggs, fish, hummus, nuts, fruit, wholegrains and yoghurt rather than relying on energy drinks and sugary snacks that can lead to crashes.

💧 Hydration matters more than most people realise
Even mild dehydration can affect focus, memory and headaches. Keep a water bottle nearby while studying and sip consistently throughout the day.

🥬 Feed your brain
Foods rich in omega-3 fats, antioxidants, iron, magnesium and B vitamins can help support cognitive function and stress resilience. Berries, leafy greens, oily fish, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate are all great additions during exam season.

⏸ Don’t underestimate rest
Your brain consolidates memory during sleep, not while endlessly rereading notes at 1am. Regular breaks, movement and sleep are part of studying, not a distraction from it.

Small habits can make a big difference during stressful weeks. Be kind to your brain while asking so much of it.

If you're studying for exams this bank holiday remember these simple but effective exam tips:

👉 Schedule breaks: Take short breaks every hour to prevent burnout. Get up, move around, stretch, or do some light stretches.

👉Connect with loved ones: Social support is crucial during stressful times. Talk to friends and family, or join a study group for a sense of community.

👉Listen to your body: If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a step back. Pushing yourself too hard can be counterproductive.

A lot of traditional “dopamine boosting” advice can actually feel impossible when you’re already burnt out, frozen or stuck in task paralysis.

If you have ADHD our feel burnt out these sources of dopamine can feel easier.

Remember:

- Tiny wins count.
- Dancing to 1 song you love counts
- Body doubling counts.
- Stretching for 30 seconds counts.
- Speaking to someone who understands counts.

Stress doesn’t just affect your mind. It changes how your gut functions too.

When the nervous system stays in a constant state of pressure, digestion can become more reactive. Bloating, IBS symptoms, pain, nausea, altered bowel movements and food sensitivities can all become part of the picture.

Your gut and nervous system are deeply connected through the gut-brain axis, with the vagus nerve acting as a communication pathway between the two. Research now shows that stress can rapidly alter the microbiome, immune signalling and gut motility.

At The Natural Clinic Cork, Louise Kane Buckley takes a whole body approach to gut health, combining naturopathy, nutritional therapy, craniosacral therapy and nervous system support to help address the root drivers behind chronic digestive symptoms.

Because sometimes the issue is not just the gut itself, but the system running the gut.

Stress, adigestion and the nervous system

If you have been told your gut symptoms are stress-related, you are not imagining the connection.

But you may never have been told what that actually means inside your body, why the symptoms do not simply resolve when life calms down, or why years of food elimination have only ever given you partial relief.

The reason is straightforward. The problem is not your gut. The problem is the system running your gut.

This is your reminder to drink an extra glass of water!

With such a gorgeous day in Cork and more good weather forecast, make sure you are hydrated.

Even mild hehydration has a big affect on your concentration, mood, and body including your blood pressure and energy.

Water + electrolytes are key e.g. cucumber water, coconut water with celtic sea salt and lemon or a non fizzy one from your local health food shop.
