September dump

Busy month. I don’t feel like a person some days.

Neurosurgery and now currently on renal medicine rotation, the concepts are hard, there’s a lot to understand and try to hold in your mind at one time. Find it challenging. Both worrying and reassuring that next year I’ll have a provisional license to practice medicine without supervision.

You can’t do much in the hospital as a student but you do have time to do small things to improve someone’s stay there. That makes a difference.

Training is consistent but hip is becoming symptomatic again some days. Tracking intake again, there’s 85 days until Christmas and I can definitely benefit from gaining a few kilos in that time. Even if I have to squat and deadlift the same weight every week, ad nauseam.

The beach is good, makes my mind feel quiet. Feels real. Shark eggs are also excellent.

August dump

Time is moving very fast again so I might try to document some of it.

August was a trying month but the imperial war museum is a 10/10.

Got an uncommon infection which was mismanaged in both primary care and the emergency department resulting in an inpatient stay and procedures which could have been avoided. Despite being medically trained it seems we are still ignored by other doctors, making it near impossible for non medically trained patients to advocate for themselves. It was an awful but insightful experience, I will not be a practitioner that ignores and dismisses the concerns of their patients. Doctors know a lot of things, but not everything all of the time.

First two weeks of final year medicine in Waterford was busy, but one assessment is done at least. The resident stray cat improves the experience a lot.

We lost one of the neighbourhood cats at home abruptly and horribly.

And of course it was my friend Lauren’s birthday, she’s been gone almost a year already but I still think of her most days and see her in the things we enjoy.

Applications for medical training after graduation open soon, so it’s time to play roulette with my future again and hope it all works out in the end.

Building nutritious meals can be very simple. These only take 10 mins to prep and cook 👩‍🍳 and can tick most of your nutrition boxes:

✅ a source of protein (20-30g)
✅ a source of starchy carbs (100-200kcal worth)
✅ 2-3 servings of vegetables
✅ a tsp/tbsp of fat (oil/ avo/ sour cream etc)

(Please note that the above are generalised rules that generally suit most people aiming to eat in a healthful way)

No cooking required Bento box ideas. I like this for taking to work or just being prepared at lunch time if working from home. The hummus and veg box is more of a snacky one as much lower calorie but you could add a source of protein alongside to make it more of a complete lunch option.
