Shiatsu is a profoundly effective bodywork rooted in Chinese Medicine, developed in Japan and brought to the West, becoming increasingly popular since the 1970's. Shiatsu technique involves stretching, joint mobilisation and applying weight through the palms, thumbs, (knees, feet, and forearms) into various parts of the recipient's body. This encourages greater harmony of Ki (energy), circulation,

flexibility and postural integrity. Many of the techniques are applied to the same system of energy channels (meridians) and acupressure points as used in acupuncture. Shiatsu has proven to help with relaxation, general health and a wide range of physical and emotional problems.

🙏 The place that hurts isn’t always the source of the pain.

🙏When something hurts, our natural instinct is to focus on the painful place.

🙏But the body can be more complex than that.

In Shiatsu, the practitioner doesn’t look only at where discomfort is felt. They consider the body as a whole and explore relationships between different areas, patterns of tension, movement and the person’s overall state.

So someone experiencing tension in their shoulders might receive pressure or gentle movement on their back, arms, legs or feet.

Within the traditional framework of Shiatsu, the body is understood as a network of interconnected pathways and relationships, including the meridians.

The question isn’t only:

“Where does it hurt?”

It can also be:

“What else is happening in the body?”

Like an iceberg, what we notice may only be part of the picture.

June is Shiatsu Awareness Month — an opportunity to highlight the value of Shiatsu as a professional, evidence-informed complementary therapy that supports health and wellbeing through skilled therapeutic touch.

Shiatsu is used by people for many reasons: managing stress, supporting recovery from fatigue and tension, improving body awareness, and creating space for rest and regulation in increasingly demanding lives. Treatments are tailored to the individual and carried out fully clothed in a calm, supportive environment.

At the Shiatsu Society Ireland, we are proud to support high standards in Shiatsu practice, education, and professional development across Ireland.

If you have been curious about Shiatsu, this month is a good opportunity to learn more or experience a treatment for yourself.

Shiatsu offers a practical and grounded approach to supporting wellbeing — through attentive touch, presence, and care.

Practitioners: throughout June, please share your treatments, talks, workshops, and events to help raise awareness of Shiatsu across Ireland.
Remember to tag Shiatsu Society Ireland and include in your posts so we can support and share your activities.
