Trauma has a way of rewriting our personal history, often leaving vast, quiet blanks where our memories should be. For those living with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), it is incredibly common to look back at childhood, adolescence, or even entire decades of adulthood and find only empty space.
When the brain is trapped in a chronic state of survival, it prioritizes staying alive over filing away memories. Years aren't lost because you weren't there; they are hidden because your mind was protecting you from a reality too heavy to process all at once. Grieving these missing pieces—the lost time, the forgotten milestones, and the blurred versions of your past self—is a profoundly painful but vital part of the healing journey.
You do not have to remember everything to deserve peace today. Healing isn't about forcing the blank spaces to fill up; it is about building a safe, grounded present where you can finally reclaim your life.

That “C” in front of “PTSD” is real important. It conveys things about CPTSD that do not apply as universally to PTSD— and the people supporting us and treating us need to know that.

CPTSD survivors don’t just struggle with intrusive memories of what happened— we also often struggle with distorted beliefs about ourselves in the wake of what happened.

CPTSD survivors don’t just struggle with reminders of what happened— we also often struggle with triggers that seem completely unrelated to what happened, especially when it comes to relationships (including relationships that are completely unrelated to those that hurt us).

CPTSD survivors aren’t just triggered by external stimuli, noises or smells or what not (though we are also triggered by those)— we’re most often triggered by feelings. Namely feeling controlled; feeling trapped; or feeling “in trouble.”

It’s not that CPTSD survivors necessarily suffer “more.”

It’s that our wounds need and respond to different care and different tools.

For example: exposure therapy can be very useful for survivors of PTSD— but most often is highly risky or unsafe for survivors of complex trauma.

Similarly, survivors of complex trauma need specific types of safety and reassurance in therapy relationships that non-CPTSD survivors (including therapists) may not understand.

Again: this is not about CPTSD being “worse” than PTSD.

It’s about accurately understanding our wound, so we can design a realistic recovery.

It’s also about providers accurately understanding our wound, so they don’t inadvertently make things worse.

Sometimes the advice isn’t bad — it’s just coming from someone who doesn’t understand the reality you’re living in.

When your energy is limited, everyday things become choices. Shower or cook. Work or rest. Leave the house or recover from leaving the house.

Chronic illness changes the rules.

You don’t need more guilt, judgment, or “have you tried…” advice. You need support that actually understands what living in a body with limited capacity can look like.

Your limits are real. Your experience is valid. And you get to decide what advice is actually useful to you. 💚

You cannot simply talk your way out of a physical flare-up.

🧠💥The graphic above perfectly captures the exhausting mental loop that so many women with chronic illness face every single day.

When a new or weird symptom pops up, the guessing game begins: Is this just my usual baseline, or should I be booking a GP appointment?

Traditional talk therapy is wonderful, and it is what most of us here in Ireland are used to.But when your history includes trauma, that confusion is actually happening in your physiology.

Trauma gets trapped in the nervous system, keeping your body locked on high alert. This hyper-vigilance blurs your internal signals, making every physical sensation feel amplified and unpredictable.

Because the issue is living in your physical cells, analyzing it intellectually from the neck up isn't enough.

This is exactly why we need to invite the body into the conversation. By blending traditional therapy with Somatic (body-based) Therapy, we can gently teach your nervous system how to lower its alarm response.

Instead of just talking about the stress, we work directly with the physical sensations to untangle the trauma from the illness.

That is how you stop the guessing game, decode your body's true language, and rebuild real internal trust.

💬 Does this symptom guessing game sound familiar to you? Have you ever felt like talk therapy missed the physical side of your healing? Let's talk in the comments.

The Energy Bill of Chronic Illness 🔋

When a healthy person hears, "Want to go out?", they think about the destination, the food, or the company.

But for someone living with a chronic illness, complex trauma, or neurodivergence, a simple invite looks like a massive mathematical equation.

It looks like an invisible energy bill.Every single step requires valuable spoons:

🚿 Shower (takes physical energy)
💄 Get ready (takes sensory energy)
🚗 Drive (takes cognitive focus)
🚶‍♀️ Walk (takes mobility reserves)
💬 Socialise (takes masking and emotional energy)
🏡 Get home🛌
Recover (the days of pain or fatigue that follow)

When women in our community say "no" to a plan, they aren’t rejecting the friendship or the idea. They are realizing that their body simply cannot pay the physical bill attached to it today.

Living with chronic pain, fatigue, or a highly sensitive nervous system means constantly negotiating with your body. If you are tired of feeling guilty for protecting your energy, please know your limits are valid.

You do not owe the world a bankrupt nervous system.

Take a breath, protect your peace, and rest without guilt today.

🤍👉 To my community: What is one part of the "energy bill" that people often forget about? Let’s validate each other in the comments below

Sometimes talking about what's happening isn't enough.

You can understand where your anxiety comes from. You can recognise your patterns. You can have all the insight in the world — and still find yourself reacting the same way, feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck or unable to move forward.

That's because we aren't just minds that think.

Our experiences can show up in our bodies, emotions and nervous systems too.

This is where an integrative or combination approach to therapy can offer something different.

Rather than relying on one approach, I bring together different therapeutic tools depending on what you need — including talking therapy, somatic approaches, yoga therapy, mindfulness and nervous-system-informed practices.

We can talk about what happened.

But we can also explore what you're feeling in your body, how your nervous system responds, and what might help you feel safer, more regulated and more connected.

Therapy doesn't have to be about sitting in a chair and talking for an hour about what's wrong.

Sometimes healing needs to involve the whole person. 🤍

If you've tried traditional talk therapy and felt like something was missing, perhaps a more integrative approach is worth exploring.

Ever feel like you know exactly why you feel anxious, but your body just won't calm down?

Have you ever had the heartbreaking realization that you didn't just choose one unhealthy relationship... you've been living the same story in different bodies?

If you grew up walking on eggshells, earning love by people-pleasing, or believing your needs were "too much," your nervous system may have learned that love feels unpredictable. That doesn't mean you chose this consciously. It means your survival strategies became your relationship blueprint.

And then one day you wake up and ask:

"Why do I keep ending up here?"

That question isn't a sign you've failed.

It's often the beginning of healing.

Healing from childhood trauma isn't just about understanding what happened. It's about recognizing how those early experiences shaped the relationships you accepted, the boundaries you struggled to set, and the ways you learned to survive.

None of this means you're broken.

It means your mind and body adapted in the best ways they could.

The good news is that what was learned can also be unlearned.

You can learn to recognize red flags without doubting yourself.
You can set boundaries without drowning in guilt.
You can stop confusing chaos with love.
You can build relationships where you feel safe, seen, and valued.

Healing doesn't happen overnight, but every small step towards choosing yourself is a powerful act of courage.

🌿 If you're ready to break old patterns and begin healing at the root, I offer online trauma-informed therapy and therapeutic yoga to help women reconnect with themselves, regulate their nervous systems, and create lasting change.

You deserve relationships that bring peace—not survival.
