THE ART OF YIN 🤍
Back in June, I started the next part of my learning and training in Functional Yin with Grace | Functional Yoga & Body Psychotherapy Trainer
I knew how much I was drawn to it. I just had no idea how much I was going to need it.
Only a few weeks after that first in-person weekend, we so tragically and suddenly lost my beautiful nephew, Aaron 🤍🦋(21). Our family has been thrown into a depth of shock and grief that none of us could ever have prepared for.
Yin isn’t only about stretching muscles. Longer, supported holds work into the deeper connective tissues and fascia, giving the body time and space to respond and soften to what is being held there.
It’s not about how far you can go. It’s about what happens when you stay. Meeting your edge in a targeted area, meeting the physical and emotional tension that’s there, and staying without needing to push past it.
Then, comes the rebound, after every hold. That stillness after the hold where nothing is being asked of you. You notice, feel and allow the body time to integrate. Sometimes that quiet space can tell you more than the hold itself.
My body hasn’t had capacity for very much lately. Apart from slowly returning to some weights, movement has mostly been a few Yin holds my body seems to ask for. Somewhere to meet the tension, grief, sadness and shock without trying to change it or move it on. Just staying. Breathing. Feeling.
Yin can meet us physically, energetically, emotionally and spiritually, through fascia, meridians, stillness, surrender and listening.
For me, Yin is becoming less about something I do and much more about something I feel.
I don’t believe YIN came into my life by coincidence or chance. Somehow it arrived at exactly the right time, before I could have known how much I was going to need it.
I thought I was learning something I would eventually bring into my work and teach to others. I didn’t realise that first, life was going to ask me to live it.
Functional Yin already feels like part of my work, but more than that, part of who I am and how I meet myself now.
Another thread in the tapestry. 🤍
