This month marks 65 years since Prince Rainer and Princess Grace of Monaco's official visit to Ireland in June 1961. The Prince had stated his intention of building a Children’s Hospital at Monaco. It was arranged that he should see the MMM International Missionary Training Hospital in Drogheda. After a visit to the Oratory, Prince Rainer and Princess Grace went to the Children’s Floor where some of the little patients presented them with toys for their children, who at the time were Princess Caroline and Prince Albert.

Since 1937, the Gospel account of The Visitation has inspired the Sisters of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) to serve communities where the need is greatest. Alongside a wide range of healthcare services, we place particular emphasis on supporting women before, during, and after childbirth, as well as promoting the health and wellbeing of children.

The Medical Missionaries of Mary draw inspiration from the story of Mary’s journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Having received the Angel Gabriel’s message that she would become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, Mary set out to visit Elizabeth, who, despite her advanced age, was also expecting a child. After a long and challenging journey, Mary arrived at Elizabeth’s home, where the two shared a profound encounter. It was there that Mary proclaimed the Magnificat - a prayer of praise that continues to inspire us to stand in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable and isolated in society.
