July is Disability Pride Month, with this year’s theme being “We Belong Here, and We’re Here to Stay” 🖤❤️💛🤍💙💚
Disability Pride Month celebrates the identity, culture, and contributions of the disability community. It’s about visibility, empowerment, and challenging ableism.
Why July? Because the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed on July 26, 1990 - a landmark moment for disability rights!
The Disability Pride flag, designed by Ann Magill, features:
- a black background, representing mourning for victims of ableist violence
-a diagonal band, symbolising breaking down barriers that separate disabled people from society
-five colored stripes, representing different disability categories.
red ❤️- physical disabilities
yellow 💛- neurodiversity
white 🤍- invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
blue 💙- emotional and psychiatric disabilities
green 💚- sensory disabilities
You can celebrate this month by sharing your story or connecting with and empowering the voices of people with disabilities in your life and online, not just during Disability Pride Month but all year long 🤍🤍
