Behind every DAISY Awards nomination is a patient or family member who felt moved to say: this nurse made a difference.

This year, we celebrated our DAISY Awards nominees both in Dublin and Cork; nurses whose compassion, skill, and humanity left a lasting impression on the people in their care.

The DAISY Award exists because sometimes a 'thank you' needs to be said out loud.

Congratulations to each and every one of you.

During the recent Pint of Science festival, Prof. Gábor Széplaki, Head of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Mater Private Network Dublin, delivered an informative talk on the future of Atrial Fibrillation treatment.

"AFib Unplugged: Zapping the Heart Back to Rhythm" offered a compelling look at how pulsed field ablation is changing the landscape of Atrial Fibrillation treatment.

High blood pressure can develop quietly over many years without causing noticeable symptoms, which is why it’s often referred to as the “silent killer”.

Dr. JJ Coughlan, consultant cardiologist at Mater Private Network in Dublin, explains that untreated high blood pressure can significantly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. Early detection and regular monitoring are key to protecting your long-term heart health.

Our HeartCheck service provides a comprehensive assessment of your cardiovascular health, including blood pressure monitoring, heart screening, and personalised advice to help identify potential risks early.

This investment means better diagnostic capabilities, a more efficient service, and an enhanced working environment for our team; all in support of delivering the highest standard of care to our patients.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this happen, especially our Histology Laboratory team and our Histopathologists, whose hard work and expertise brought this project to life.

Accuracy, organisation, and teamwork are all essential in a busy hospital pharmacy department. Amy Roche, dispensary manager at Mater Private Network in Dublin, oversees the day-to-day running of the dispensary team, helping to ensure patients receive their medications safely and on time.

Amy joined Mater Private Network in 2019 and previously worked in the aseptic compounding unit before moving into her current role in 2023. Today, she manages staff scheduling and training, supports electronic prescribing systems, oversees dispensary workflows, and works closely with clinical teams to help maintain high standards of patient care and medication safety across the hospital.

Amy says one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is leading a hardworking team and helping patients access the medications and support they need throughout their care journey.

A dislocated and fractured elbow, while competing abroad - that was Nicola Tuthill's first major injury.

Three months out is a serious setback for any athlete, particularly when your sport is as technical as hammer throwing. But speaking with Mr. Pádhraig O'Loughlin, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Mater Private Network Cork, Nicola explains how going through that experience young actually helped her manage the fear that comes with injury later in her career.

When your entire performance depends on your physical health, knowing you've come back before makes all the difference.

A significant milestone for our cardiology team in Cork. Mater Private Network has become the first hospital in Cork to use the VARIPULSE™ PRO, a state-of-the-art technology that helps treat patients with irregular heart rhythms more precisely and effectively than before.

The first procedure using this technology was led by Dr. Maheshwar Pauriah alongside our Electrophysiology team. It marks an important step in bringing some of the most advanced cardiac care available to patients in Cork and across the Munster region.

A huge congratulations to the entire team for their hard work and dedication in reaching this milestone.

If you've had a mastectomy, understanding your breast reconstruction options is an essential part of moving forward with confidence.

Mr. Jamie Martin-Smith, consultant plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeon at Mater Private Network Dublin, explains that both DIEP flap and PAP flap procedures use a patient’s own skin and fat for breast reconstruction, with the main difference being where that tissue is taken from.

Body shape, available tissue, and recovery considerations all help guide which option may be most suitable, supporting a personalised approach to reconstruction.
