I really enjoyed this interview with Graeme Wood from Rapid Change Hypnosis about Havening Techniques, the neuroscience behind how they work, and why they can produce such rapid and lasting results when resolving trauma and anxiety-based problems.

We covered a lot of ground, including how I integrate Havening with hypnotherapy in my clinical work.

You know there’s nothing to worry about. So why does the anxiety still feel so real?

You can know logically that you’re safe. You can recognise that your reaction doesn’t make sense and tell yourself there’s nothing to fear. Yet your mind and body can still respond automatically with anxiety and uncomfortable physical sensations.

One of the important insights from neuroscience is that overwhelming stress and traumatic experiences can become strongly encoded within the brain’s emotional and threat-detection systems, including the amygdala.

Later, something as simple as a sight, sound, smell, sensation, place or situation associated with that earlier experience can trigger the fight, flight or freeze response again, sometimes before you’re even consciously aware of what has triggered it.

This is why simply telling yourself to “stop worrying” or trying to think more positively often isn’t enough.

Successfully resolving anxiety requires more than understanding what is causing the problem. It requires the knowledge and experience to identify what is driving the anxiety, together with the therapeutic skills and methods needed to resolve it.

For over 20 years, I have specialised in helping clients with anxiety and anxiety-based disorders. I combine clinical hypnotherapy, Havening Techniques® and advanced psychological methods to identify and resolve the underlying factors contributing to the presenting problem.

My focus is not simply on helping clients manage or cope with their symptoms. It is on creating real, tangible and lasting positive changes in how they think, feel and respond.

My next Certified Havening Techniques® Practitioner Training takes place live online this October

I've been using Havening Techniques® in my clinical practice since 2012, particularly in my work with anxiety, trauma, fears, phobias and other emotionally driven problems.

Over the years, I've also had the privilege of training therapists and health professionals internationally in how to use these powerful neuroscience-based techniques effectively with their own clients.

One of the things I really enjoy about teaching Havening is seeing people experience the techniques for themselves and then learning how to apply them confidently in their own therapeutic work.

The training is very practical and experiential. Over the two days, I'll demonstrate how I use Havening with clients, explain the neuroscience behind how and why the techniques work, and give everyone plenty of opportunity to practise and experience the methods for themselves.

If you're a therapist, coach or health professional and you've been interested in learning Havening and adding these techniques to your therapeutic skillset, I've put all the information about the October training in the comments below.

What results can people experience from hypnotherapy?

For over 20 years, I have specialised in helping people resolve anxiety-based disorders, including anxiety, panic attacks, fears and phobias, trauma and many of the other symptoms that can arise from them.

During that time, I've worked with thousands of clients in Dublin and online, and have also trained therapists and health professionals internationally in advanced psychological methods for working with anxiety, trauma and emotional issues.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the real, tangible changes clients can experience, not only within their sessions, but in their overall quality of life and wellbeing, feeling calmer, more relaxed, confident and free from problems that may have affected them for years.

My approach combines clinical hypnotherapy, Havening Techniques® and advanced psychological methods, with a strong focus on achieving positive and lasting results.

But rather than me telling you about the results, you can hear directly from the people I've worked with.

What have I learned after working with thousands of clients over the past 20 years?

One of the biggest changes I've witnessed during my career has been our growing understanding of how the brain and nervous system respond to stress and trauma.

When I first began practising over 20 years ago, we understood far less about the role the brain plays in anxiety-based conditions. Today, neuroscience has given us a much clearer picture.

We now know that overwhelming or unresolved stressful experiences can become encoded in the brain's emotional centres, particularly the amygdala. When this happens, the nervous system can remain on high alert long after the original event has passed, contributing to symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, PTSD and many other stress-related difficulties.

After working with thousands of clients, one principle has consistently been reinforced.

People naturally want relief from the symptoms they're experiencing. That's understandable. However, I've found that lasting resolution is often achieved by identifying and resolving what is causing the presenting problem, rather than simply trying to manage or cope with the symptoms.

That's why every consultation begins with understanding not only what someone is experiencing, but more importantly, what is causing their presenting problem.

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is seeing clients experience real, tangible changes for themselves. As we begin resolving the underlying causes, clients often notice changes in how they think, feel and respond, both during the sessions and, more importantly, between the sessions as they return to everyday life.

For me, that's one of the most rewarding aspects of this work and one of the reasons I'm still passionate about helping people achieve lasting positive change after more than 20 years in clinical practice.

Why can your body react before you've even had time to think?

Many people assume anxiety begins with their thoughts.

In reality, the body can often react first.

Your heart starts racing. Your breathing changes. Your muscles tighten. You begin to sweat, shake or feel hot, often before you've consciously recognised what's happening.

This is because the brain and nervous system can learn to associate certain situations, places, sounds or experiences with danger, automatically triggering the body's fight, flight or freeze response.

One of the biggest challenges is that many people are unaware of the underlying experiences or patterns that may be driving these automatic reactions.

For over 20 years, I have specialised in helping clients identify and resolve the underlying factors contributing to anxiety, panic attacks, trauma and other anxiety-based disorders using clinical hypnotherapy and advanced psychological methods.

As these underlying issues are resolved, many clients begin to feel calmer, more relaxed and more in control.

Understanding what is really causing a problem is often the first step towards resolving it.

What should you look for when choosing a hypnotherapist?

Choosing the right hypnotherapist is an important decision, particularly if you have been struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, phobias, confidence issues, unwanted habits or other emotional and behavioural challenges.

One of the first things I recommend is looking for someone who specialises in the particular issue you want help with. It's also worth considering their clinical experience. How long have they been working with clients? Do they practise full-time? Have they successfully helped people experiencing similar difficulties?

I also encourage people to take the time to read Google reviews, client success stories and testimonials. They can provide valuable insight into the experiences of previous clients and the results they have achieved.

For over 20 years, I have worked full-time as a clinical hypnotherapist, helping thousands of clients resolve anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, phobias, confidence issues and unwanted habits. Alongside my clinical practice, I also train therapists and health professionals internationally in advanced hypnotherapy and Havening Techniques®.

Choosing a therapist with the right experience, specialist knowledge and a proven track record gives you the best opportunity to achieve lasting positive change.

Why can anxiety continue long after a stressful or traumatic experience has passed?

Many anxiety-based problems, including panic attacks, phobias and post-traumatic stress symptoms, can develop when the brain and nervous system continue responding to past stressful or traumatic experiences as though the threat is still present.

Over time, certain sights, sounds, smells, places, thoughts or situations can automatically trigger the body's fight, flight or freeze response, even when there is no immediate danger.

One of the biggest challenges is that many people are unaware of the specific experiences or patterns that may be driving their symptoms.

For over 20 years, I have specialised in helping clients identify and resolve the underlying factors contributing to anxiety-based disorders using clinical hypnotherapy and advanced psychological methods.

As these underlying issues are resolved, many clients begin to experience significant improvements in anxiety, panic attacks and other related symptoms, often feeling calmer, more relaxed and more in control.

Understanding what is really causing a problem is often the first step towards resolving it.
