Day 6: Postpartum tips that actually help! 👌

During pregnancy, bloods are on the agenda constantly. The second the baby’s out, that priority disappears — even though your body’s just been through as much, if not more.

My tip: at your six week check, or whenever you next see your GP, request full bloods. Specifically ask for iron, ferritin, B12, and a full thyroid panel.

You might get a look like you don’t know what you’re talking about when you ask for ferritin specifically. Ask anyway. Ferritin is your iron stores — and even if your iron itself comes back normal, your ferritin can be low, and that alone can cause real symptoms. Tiredness, brain fog, mood, anxiety — it’s not always just “new mam, not sleeping.” Sometimes it’s low iron stores that nobody checked.

For postpartum women, I recommend a good quality women’s health multivitamin. If you’re breastfeeding, staying on your pregnancy multivitamin and pregnancy fish oil is worth continuing too.

Postpartum can feel like nobody’s asking how you are anymore. But you are so important. Without you feeling well, your whole family feels it. You are allowed to take up this much space.

If any of this series has resonated and you’d like support with your own postpartum recovery, I’d love to help. I genuinely love supporting postpartum women to feel nourished, energised and able to show up as the mother they want to be — because this is hard, and you shouldn’t have to figure it out alone.

Day 5: Postpartum tips that actually help! 💖

Let’s take a moment to appreciate everything our bodies have done — growing a baby, birthing a baby, and for those breastfeeding, continuing to feed that baby through your body every single day.

This is normal. A postpartum body is normal. I want to get away from “bounce back” culture and the expectation that a woman should look like she never had a baby five minutes after having one.

Honestly, this one’s been harder for me this time round. With my first, the weight came off quickly while breastfeeding. This time, it hasn’t — and even knowing all the reasons why, the mindset around it is still hard some days.

So this is a reminder to myself as much as anyone reading: this is a season, not forever. Be kind to your body. It’s done something incredible.

Day 4: Postpartum tips that actually help 💖

Filmed this one with my Yeti spout bottle in hand and my baby on my hip — turns out I love drinking from a spout just as much as she does 😂

My tip: get a water vessel you actually love, and take it everywhere. Ask your partner to help remind you to refill it if that’s what it takes.

We’re already running low on nourishment postpartum, and a lot of us start out dehydrated from everything lost during birth. Hydration isn’t separate from nourishment — it’s part of it.

Electrolytes matter too, especially in the heat. Watermelon’s an easy way to get some in, or a proper electrolyte packet — just skip the artificial sweeteners, stevia glycosides are the better option.

Dehydration shows up more than we realise — tired skin, dry hair, low energy. We all “know” the 2 litres a day advice, but knowing it and actually managing it while running on no time are two very different things.

Day 3: Postpartum tips that actually help 💖

Eating regularly has been one of my core nutrition pillars since the day I started studying this properly, and postpartum is exactly when I notice it the most.
If I skip a meal, or don’t get enough protein, or have coffee before actually eating something — I feel it. My energy drops, my mood dips, even my sleep gets affected that night.

This isn’t just “good advice,” it’s the thing that actually grounds me through the demands of being a mam.
My tip: protein with every meal and snack, and nothing that needs two hands free.

One of my go-tos — rice cake, nut butter, sugar-free jam, banana, a sprinkle of ground nuts and seeds on top. That’s protein, fats and real nourishment in under a minute, eaten one-handed while she’s on my hip.

Day 2: Postpartum Tips that actually help 💖

With diastasis recti this time round, my usual yoga class just didn’t work for my body anymore. So I sat down with my husband and we figured out where movement could actually fit into our very full life — a toddler, an 8-month-old, and not much spare time between them.

What we landed on: buggy walk to drop my toddler at crèche, then I keep going — a big loop up the hills and back home before work starts.

Movement doesn’t need to be vigorous to count. Walking is one of the best things you can do for your body — morning sun, fresh air, moving mind, body and spirit all at once.

The thing that actually matters isn’t intensity, it’s consistency. Find what works for you, and keep showing up for it.

Day 1: Postpartum tips that actually help 💖

With my first, I tried to do it all “right” — sleep training, chasing naps, staying up for that evening time with my husband because I didn’t want to lose it. I ran myself into the ground for two years.

This time, I’m doing one thing differently: I go to bed when she does. Around 7pm. Some nights I’m not asleep straight away, but I’m resting — and I’m usually properly asleep by 10. No interrupted scrolling, no forcing myself to stay up for “me time” that was actually costing me more than it gave back.

“Sleep when the baby sleeps” never worked for me. This does.

Day 1 of what’s actually helped me postpartum, second time round, as a mam and a Nutritional Therapist. Prioritise your sleep — whatever that actually looks like for you. 😘

I get asked variations of the same advice a lot, and some of it drives me a little bit crazy, not because it’s wrong exactly, but because it’s incomplete.

Swipe through for the advice I hear most often, and what I’d actually add to the conversation as a Nutritional Therapist.
None of this replaces your GP, but it’s the bit that so often gets left out of the conversation entirely. 🙄

POV: your toddler has hayfever, but you’re a herbalist & nutritionist… aka a witch 🧙‍♀️😜

So obviously — baby on one hip — you make a herbal tea from fresh dried herbs, and think: I’ll turn this into an ice pop 💡

He helped make these ones, and he knows exactly what’s in them. I love getting him involved and showing him we can make something that tastes good and supports how he’s feeling. 🥰

They went so fast I didn’t even get a photo of the finished pops — very well received, let’s just say that. 🍯

Your bloods came back “normal.” So why doesn’t your body feel like it?

If you’re tired of being dismissed, tired of generic advice, and ready to actually get to the root of what’s going on — gut, hormones, skin, it’s all one conversation, not three separate problems — I’d love to work with you.

I’m Rachael, Clinical Herbalist and Nutritional Therapist, and I work with women who’ve been failed by the “just take this and see” approach. We start with your gut, rebuild from there, and your hormones, skin and energy follow.

Right now I’m working fully online, so it fits around real life — mine included. 🌿

Back to work after maternity leave and learning to juggle it all over again ✨🌱✨

Lunch that actually fuels me. A few minutes with my girl. Focused work on your health plans. And at the end of it all, this — the reason I do any of it. 👩‍❤️‍👨👶🤱

This is what balance looks like when I’m intentional about it — not perfect, just real. And it’s exactly why I understand what it takes when I sit down with you.
