Be part of the conversation in Prague!
What happens when we listen closely not only to outcomes, but also to the experiences of participants — and to the horses involved?

In this video, Dr Sarah J Reega introduces two presentations she will give at the HHRF–HETI–CZU Prague 2026 International Symposium, each looking at Equine Assisted Services from a very different but equally important perspective.

Her first presentation:

Horsemanship-focused equine-assisted learning for veterans: a preliminary thematic analysis

Drawing on interviews with veterans who completed an eight-week horsemanship-focused Equine Assisted Learning programme, Sarah will explore the importance of military culture, community, horsemanship progression and the relationship with horses.

The findings highlight how a “by-veteran, for-veteran” environment can support camaraderie, emotional awareness, emotional regulation and psychological wellbeing.

Her second presentation:

Equipment Use on Therapeutic Riding Horses’ Heads: Exploring Trends in the United States

Based on responses from 403 therapeutic riding instructors, this study examines how bridles, halters, reins and lead ropes are being combined in practice — and what this could mean for horse welfare.

One particularly important finding: 76% of respondents reported that conflicting pressure from rider and leader occurred at least some of the time.

Two presentations. Two very different questions. One shared priority: improving practice through research, participant experience and greater attention to equine wellbeing.

🎉Exclusive benefit for HETI members!🎉

We’re delighted to share that HETI members can receive 10% off all Certification for Equine Interaction Professionals (CBEIP) certifications and webinars. The discount code can also be used alongside CBEIP’s equity discount codes.

Unlike certificates that recognise completion of education or training in a particular method, CBEIP certification demonstrates that a practitioner has met minimum standards for ethical and professional practice.

CBEIP does not endorse any specific methodology or approach. Instead, certification focuses on the applicant’s demonstrated knowledge and proficiency, recognising qualifications from a wide range of programmes and approaches.

A great opportunity for HETI members to strengthen their professional development and demonstrate their commitment to high standards in equine interactions.

The field of Equine Assisted Services has changed enormously over the past few decades. Research is stronger. Education is developing. Horse wellbeing has moved much closer to the centre of our thinking.

But where do we go from here?

At the HHRF–HETI–CZU Prague 2026 International Symposium, Tamara Merritt from Hearts & Horses, USA, will invite us to look both backwards and forwards in her presentation:

Looking Back to Move Forward: The Next Chapter of Equine-Assisted Services

Drawing on the development of the profession and themes emerging throughout the symposium, Tamara will explore how research, education, collaboration, innovation and horse wellbeing have shaped Equine Assisted Services — and what may shape the next chapter.

It is also a reminder that the future of this field will not be created by one organisation, profession or country.

It will be built through collaboration, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning from each other.
