Anyone else just love ferns? They are so atmospheric and beautiful in any setting, be it alongside a boreen or amid the Burren rock landscape. Plant some in a garden and see how their unique foliage complements and frames other plants. And their appeal increases after a good shower of rain.

Plantain lanceolata, more commonly called 'Ribwort' is one of our commonest gealing plants and can be found in most countries. It is so widespread that we often see it without really 'seeing' it as it nestles in lawns and grassy places. But what a valuable plant it is. From one of the top wound healers to a terrific remedy for respiratory complaints. It helps relieve phlegm, easing congestion and is also a great addition to any hayfever or allergy mix. Sometimes our treasures really are right at our feet!

Well done Mayo! Champions. Great game, one for the ages. But don't leave it so long again.

Capturing all that sunshine in this infused oil of Calendula. The blosdoms are perfect for picking almost every day. Infusing them in oil is a lot simpler and quicker with the help of solar energy. I have no doubt any balms and creams I make will be all the more effective after these lovely hot weeks.

Hypericum perforatum, more commonly known as St. John's wort is in full flower and abundant in fields and by roadsides right now in many places. It's a true marker of a good summer for me that I get to collect enough for the year ahead. I can spot its radiant yellow flowers from a good distance and that is where I will make my way. It is a very light herb and by the time you strip flowers and leaves from its stem, you don't have a huge amount. So I usually try to gather three or four times during July when it is at its peak. Anyone going for a saunter with me at that time usually gets roped into picking too!

But I value it so much for its role in supporting the nervous system, helping with anxiety and low mood And great for nerve pain too.

Can't think of anywhere else in Ireland where the Bloody cranesbill is so vibrant as here in the Burren.

Gotta make hay.......may be the last chance to harvest these beauties at the peak of their flowering and properties before the thunderstorms. There will be second cuts, but it's great to have a day like this to gather. I collected Rosemary, Lavender, Yarrow, Motherwort, Vervain, Calendula, Nettle and Melissa. A good day's work.
