We were delighted to launch Make Way Day today in Carlow! 🙌

Carlow County Council marked the day with an event supported by Carlow Public Participation Network - PPN, Carlow Centre for Independent Living, Delta Sensory Gardens, and Special Olympics Ireland. A great example of local organisations coming together to highlight the everyday obstacles that get in the way for people with disabilities.

If you haven't already, head out, spot an obstacle near you, and share it with . Public space belongs to everyone.

Tomorrow is Make Way Day!

Every day, wheelchair users, people who are blind, and others with mobility needs encounter obstacles that most of us never notice — a car on the footpath, a bin blocking the path, an A-board outside a café.

These aren't minor inconveniences. They force people onto the road and make it harder to simply get from A to B.

On Friday 29 May, we're asking everyone across Ireland to do one thing: get out into your street, spot an obstacle, and share it using .

Public space belongs to everyone. Help us make it work that way.

We are at the Department of Social Protection's Social Inclusion Forum . Disability was a key issue, including Cost of Disability, poverty, low employment, structural exclusion.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said "We do have the resources available to tackle problems of social inclusion."

We know the money is there. must now deliver for disabled people.

🎥 Make Way Day is coming this Friday 29 May!

DFI CEO Elaine Teague has a message for everyone in Ireland. Cars on kerbs, bins on footpaths, bikes blocking the way are real barriers for disabled people every single day.

On Make Way Day, we're asking everyone to take personal responsibility, look around, and make way.

See something blocking the path? Snap a photo and share it with us using .

We are at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality Estimates process for Budget 2027.

The forum is an opportunity to discuss priorities directly with Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley TD and Minister of State for Disabilities Emer Higgins TD.

Among DFI's key focuses on the day will be greater transparency in the allocation and process around Estimates for our members and the organisations we represent.

Louise O’Reilly TD Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social Protection has announced the party will bring forward a Dáil motion calling for an emergency Cost of Disability payment to be implemented immediately.

DFI, alongside the Irish Wheelchair Association, Access for All, with the support of more than 30 civil society organisations, has been calling for this payment since Budget 2026 when one-off targeted payments for disabled people were removed. We welcome any political momentum that keeps this issue at the top of the national agenda.

Disabled people and their families are being forced to make impossible choices between heating their homes, putting food on the table, and powering essential mobility devices.

People with disabilities deserve to live with dignity, independence and security.

The case for an emergency payment, and a permanent Cost of Disability Scheme, is overwhelming. We will continue to push for it.

Make Way Day 2026 is one week away! And we're asking everyone to get involved. 🙌

On the day, get out into your street, take a photo of anything blocking the way for people with disabilities, and share it using .

A car on the footpath. A bin in the middle of the path. An A-board. A branch. You know the ones.

Public space is for everyone. Let's make it work that way.
