☀️ EXERCISING IN THE SUN? STAY SAFE & STAY HYDRATED 💧

The warm weather has arrived 🌿🏃
Getting outdoors for a walk, run, cycle or workout is brilliant for both physical and mental health 💪🧠

But exercising in the heat means your body loses more fluids through sweat — and dehydration can affect performance, recovery and overall health ⚠️

Here are some important tips to stay safe in the sun 👇
💧 Hydrate BEFORE you exercise
Don’t wait until you feel thirsty — start your workout already hydrated.

🚰 Drink water DURING exercise
Especially during longer sessions or hotter days ☀️

⚡ Electrolytes can help
If exercising for longer periods, electrolyte drinks may help replace salts lost through sweat.

🧴 Wear SPF sunscreen
Even on cloudy Irish days ☁️

🕶️ Wear light breathable clothing
Light-coloured clothing and hats can help keep the body cooler.

⏰ Exercise at cooler times
Early mornings or evenings are usually safer and more comfortable.

🥵 Watch for warning signs
Dizziness, headaches, nausea, cramps or unusual fatigue may be signs of dehydration or overheating.

👟 Listen to your body
Your body works harder in the heat — slowing down and taking breaks is completely okay.

🦴 Osteoporosis Awareness 🦴

Osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more prone to fractures—even from minor falls. It’s especially common in women, with up to 1 in 3 affected, often due to hormonal changes after menopause.

Know your risk factors:
✔️ Female
✔️ Over 40 / postmenopausal
✔️ Family history
✔️ Low activity levels
✔️ Smoking or excess alcohol
✔️ Low calcium intake

Early detection is key. A simple DEXA scan can identify reduced bone density before fractures occur.

What can you do? 💪 Stay active with regular exercise

🥛 Ensure adequate calcium & Vitamin D
🚭 Stop smoking & limit alcohol
🩺 Seek professional advice if at risk

At Tyrrell Physiotherapy we can help you stay strong, mobile, and independent with physiotherapy and tailored care.
