I just want to clarify, as it’s a question I’m frequently receiving via email and across our social media platforms, over the past 2-4 weeks.

Many of you are asking whether there are Firefly Somatics™ practitioners available in your home countries — including Canada, UK, USA, Australia, and beyond, or where you might be able to access this work outside of Dublin, Ireland.

The Firefly Method® is a fully registered and trademarked methodology under the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), and at present it is facilitated exclusively by our current Irish-based team.

This means there are no practitioners outside of this team offering this work. This is intentional, as it allows us to protect the integrity, depth, and consistency of the method, ensuring every client receives the same standard of care and facilitation.

We are deeply intentional about how this work is held and delivered, and keeping it within a trained, contained team ensures that the quality, structure, and ethos of the method remains consistent across every client experience.

If you are interested in working with us, you can do so online or in person through our Irish-based team.

With love,
Danielle

“Trauma is stored in the body,” 🧠🫀

The body is often described as a vessel or storage container for experiences and memories; however, a more accurate understanding is that trauma primarily affects the nervous system and its survival responses. When an overwhelming event occurs, the autonomic nervous system mobilises into protective states such as fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. If the defensive response cannot be fully completed or resolved at the time of the event, the trauma cycle may remain incomplete within the nervous system. Rather than the body “holding” trauma as a static memory, the system remains physiologically organised around unresolved survival activation.

When a threat is perceived, the autonomic nervous system mobilises: heart rate increases, muscles tighten, attention narrows, and afferent and efferent signalling coordinates a survival response (fight, flight, freeze, or collapse). Ideally, once safety returns, the system discharges that activation and returns to baseline.

Difficult or overwhelming experiences can interrupt that cycle. The mobilisation does not fully resolve, so the system remains partially activated. This can show up as chronic tension, hypervigilance, shutdown states, or rigid patterns of protection. Not because “trauma is stored,” but because regulation and completion did not fully occur in the moment.

Some somatic approaches describe healing as supporting the nervous system to renegotiate and complete these interrupted response cycles, restoring flexibility between activation and settling states.

Within The Firefly Method® , this aligns with the core principle: supporting neuromodulation and neuroplastic change through embodied awareness and practical somatic processes, allowing the system to gradually re-pattern survival-based signalling into more adaptive regulation.

The shift is not about “removing trauma from the body,” but restoring capacity, so the nervous system no longer has to remain locked in protective loops.

Thank you to my wonderful client for openly sharing his journey, with the hopes of inspiring other men and lifting the stigma around healing.

🧠 4 Phases of Trauma Healing

Trauma healing unfolds in non-linear stages — and recognizing where your client is can help you pace the work with greater precision and care. In trauma therapy training at Academy of Therapy Wisdom, clinicians often explore how matching interventions to the phase of healing supports nervous system safety and deeper integration. These principles are central to the learning community at the Academy of Therapy Wisdom.

1️⃣ Stabilization
You focus on building safety, regulation, and internal resources so the nervous system has enough support before deeper work begins.

2️⃣ Processing
Traumatic memories and survival responses are worked through gradually, with careful pacing to avoid overwhelm.

3️⃣ Meaning-Making
Clients begin to make sense of their experience and update old beliefs, often with growing self-compassion.

4️⃣ Integration
Body, emotion, and narrative come together, supporting more flexibility, regulation, and choice in daily life.

✨ Trauma-informed therapy isn’t about moving faster — it’s about moving at the speed of safety.

"This profound work has changed me personally and has been very effective in working with my clients. Although I need to review the material as it is so rich and deep the pieces I have incorporated have made a very positive impact." -Sonya Randle

Trauma is not literally “stored” in the body as though it is an object trapped inside the tissues waiting to be released. What actually happens is far more neurophysiological and deeply biological.

When someone experiences chronic stress, emotional neglect, abandonment, rejection, or developmental trauma, the brain and nervous system adapt around survival. The amygdala becomes increasingly attuned to danger, the nervous system becomes conditioned towards protection, and the body begins organising itself around patterns of vigilance, performance, masking, over functioning, shutdown, or dissociation.

Over time, these adaptations can influence the entire body. The autonomic nervous system may maintain long standing patterns of muscular guarding, altered breathing mechanics, jaw clenching, pelvic floor contraction, postural bracing, fascial tension, and chronic neuromuscular holding patterns. The body is not holding trauma in a mystical sense. It is holding protective responses that were once necessary for survival.

This client grew up with deep emotional and physical neglect alongside profound abandonment and rejection wounds. Much of his identity became organised around performance and productivity, driven by the unconscious belief that he had to mould himself to fit into the world in order to feel accepted, worthy, or safe. He learned to wear different masks in different environments whilst disconnecting from his authentic self.

Underneath these adaptive patterns was a nervous system that never truly felt safe to rest. For years, this manifested physically through chronic tension and bracing, particularly around the jaw, pelvic floor, glutes, lower back, and iliopsoas region. His system was constantly preparing, constantly contracting, and constantly holding itself together.

During his recent psychosomatic healing session, the body moved into a spontaneous involuntary nervous system response. What you are witnessing here is not trauma “leaving the body”, nor is it simply emotional catharsis.

These involuntary responses, including shaking, muscular contractions, spontaneous movements, and shifts in breathing, are often signs that the nervous system is finally able to complete previously interrupted survival responses and resolve mobilised energy that could not fully discharge when the original experiences occurred.

This is what can happen when the system finally experiences enough safety to stop holding so tightly onto survival.

Client Testimonial ⭐

Meet Sarah, a client who recently completed an 18 month journey with us. She initially enrolled in our Guided Psychosomatic Healing Programme, “A Journey of Higher Conscious Awakening.”

For more than a decade, Sarah faced ongoing health challenges. Between 2014 and 2024, her symptoms not only persisted but gradually intensified. Despite undergoing extensive testing, including detailed bloodwork and multiple MRIs, no clear diagnosis was ever identified. After years of uncertainty, she understandably felt exhausted, discouraged and without answers.

Through her work in the programme, Sarah came to recognise that her nervous system and immune responses had been significantly dysregulated. What she once experienced as purely physical symptoms, she now understands as the body’s response to prolonged stress and unresolved trauma, signals that had gone unheard for far too long.

18 months on, Sarah’s transformation speaks for itself. She is now out of physical pain, has no symptoms and is finally able to live her life fully.
