***Protect your peace. Protect your energy***
Our minds naturally pay more attention to negative or threatening information. This is often called the **negativity bias**. Long ago, being alert to danger was essential for survival. Today, however, constant exposure to frightening headlines, conflict, tragedy & fear can leave us feeling emotionally & energetically overwhelmed.
From a holistic perspective, I believe we need to be conscious not only of what we put into our bodies, but also of what we allow into our **minds, emotions & personal energy**.
When we repeatedly consume distressing stories, our nervous system can respond as though danger is close to us. Stress hormones such as cortisol & adrenaline can increase, leaving us feeling anxious, unsettled, exhausted or constantly on edge.
Energetically, I also notice how easily we can carry the weight of what we have watched or read long after we have put down the phone or switched off the television.
This doesn't mean ignoring what is happening in the world.
For me, it means choosing **conscious awareness rather than constant exposure**.
I don't need breaking news coming into my space throughout the day. I will naturally hear about important events through conversations & social media. If something happens that I feel I need to understand properly, I can then choose to research it from reliable sources.
The difference is that I am choosing when to engage with it, rather than allowing it to continually enter my space.
And when something I read or watch is particularly upsetting, I give myself time afterwards to come back into balance. That might mean Reiki, meditation, grounding, stepping outside into nature, lighting a candle, journalling, working with crystals, or simply sitting quietly & allowing my nervous system to settle.
Protecting your energy does not mean pretending that difficult things aren't happening.
It means recognising that you don't have to carry the energy of the entire world in order to care about it.
If you notice that watching the news changes your mood, increases your anxiety or leaves you feeling fearful about the world, try changing your relationship with it.
Instead of checking several times a day, perhaps choose a specific time to catch up. You might even discover that once or twice a week is enough for you.
Be especially mindful of **when** you consume difficult information.
What you take into your mind first thing in the morning can influence the energy & emotional tone you carry into your day. And filling your mind with distressing stories immediately before bed can make it much harder to find the sense of peace needed for restful sleep.
Stay aware. Stay compassionate. Stay informed when you need to be.
But also give yourself permission to protect your peace.
***You can care deeply about what is happening in the world without giving the news unlimited access to your mind, your nervous system and your energy.***
