๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’š ADHD & IBS: More Connected Than Many People Realise

ADHD doesnโ€™t just affect attention, focus, or organisation. Research and clinical experience increasingly show that ADHD can also affect physical health โ€” including digestive health.

Many people with ADHD are surprised to learn that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) appears to be more common in individuals with ADHD than in the general population.

Why?

The brain and the gut are constantly communicating through what is known as the โ€œgut-brain axis.โ€ When one is under stress, the other often feels the impact too.

People with ADHD may experience:

โšก Higher stress levels and heightened stress responses
๐Ÿ˜ด Sleep difficulties that affect digestion and recovery
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Irregular eating patterns from hyperfocus, forgetfulness, or impulsivity
๐Ÿ’ง Poor hydration habits
๐Ÿง  Emotional overwhelm and anxiety that can worsen gut symptoms
๐Ÿ“… Difficulty maintaining consistent routines around meals and self-care

Over time, these factors can contribute to digestive discomfort, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, or IBS flare-ups.

The good news is that small lifestyle changes can support both the brain and the gut.

โœ… Build consistent routines
โœ… Stay hydrated throughout the day
โœ… Prioritise sleep
โœ… Move your body regularly
โœ… Learn your food triggers
โœ… Manage stress where possible
โœ… Be kind to yourself during flare-ups

Remember: IBS symptoms are real, and ADHD-related challenges are real.

If you live with both, youโ€™re not imagining itโ€”and youโ€™re certainly not alone.

Supporting ADHD is not just about improving concentration. Itโ€™s about supporting the whole person: mind, body, health, and wellbeing.

๐Ÿ’š Small changes can make a big difference.

Our goal isnโ€™t simply to run a fun activation challengeโ€”itโ€™s to raise awareness of neurodiversity, encourage conversations about mental health, and help make specialist support more accessible.

27/05/2026

โ˜€๏ธ ADHD & HEAT WAVES ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ง

Heat waves can affect everyone โ€” but for many people with ADHD, the effects can feel even more intense.

When the body overheats, the brain has to work harder to regulate attention, emotions, energy levels, hydration, and stress responses. For individuals with ADHD, whose nervous systems are already working overtime, extreme heat can worsen both mental and physical symptoms.

Many people notice:
โšก increased irritability
โšก brain fog
โšก emotional overwhelm
โšก poor concentration
โšก fatigue and burnout
โšก disrupted routines
โšก dehydration
โšก difficulty regulating emotions
โšก increased restlessness or anxiety

ADHD can also make it harder to notice body signals like thirst, overheating, hunger, or exhaustion โ€” meaning many people forget to hydrate regularly until symptoms become severe.

Hot weather may also impact:
๐Ÿง  executive functioning
๐Ÿง  motivation
๐Ÿง  productivity
๐Ÿง  sleep quality
๐Ÿง  emotional regulation
๐Ÿง  recovery after physical activity

This becomes especially important during:
โ˜€๏ธ heat waves
๐Ÿƒ endurance events
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ exercise
๐Ÿš— long days outdoors
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป demanding work schedules

What helps?
๐Ÿ’ง Drink water regularly โ€” even before you feel thirsty
๐ŸงŠ Use reminders to hydrate
โ„๏ธ Stay cool where possible
๐Ÿฅ— Eat regularly and avoid dehydration
๐Ÿ˜ด Prioritise sleep and recovery
๐Ÿ“‹ Reduce pressure and simplify tasks
๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ Avoid peak heat hours when possible
โค๏ธ Give yourself grace during extreme weather

Sometimes productivity drops because your brain and body are trying to cope with the heat โ€” not because youโ€™re lazy or failing.

Your nervous system matters.
Your hydration matters.
Your recovery matters.

Small adjustments can make a huge difference during hot weather. ๐ŸŒฟ

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Protect your focus. ๐Ÿ’š
