Someone contacted me this week looking for information or memories on the Cuchulain Bar on O'Connell Street in Ennis. I found out that the bar opened in December 1971 and was run by McKernan brothers from Lurgan in Northern Ireland. Before that it had been the Arkle Inn. One man I spoke to remembers going in the Cuchulain for a Christmas holiday get together and being disappointed to find that the price of a pint was 23p instead of the usual 20p in the other pubs! I couldn't find out when the pub closed, but it was located at 53 O'Connell St where Pat McCarthy's Shoes is now. This is a photo of the old Gaiety Cinema which closed in 1976 and where Dunnes Stores opened in 1992. The Cuchulain would have been further down the street toward the Cathedral, on the opposite side of the road. Does anyone remember this pub?
