Is It Really Sciatica?

Pain in the buttock or down the leg is often called “sciatica” — but not every case is actually coming from the sciatic nerve.

Similar symptoms can sometimes be linked with:

• tight or irritated muscles
• hip or pelvic problems
• tendon irritation
• joint restriction
• referred pain from the lower back
• true nerve irritation

That is why the location of the pain alone does not tell us the whole story.

At ABC Health Ireland, we look at how you move, which areas are tight or weak, whether the symptoms behave like nerve pain, and what seems to aggravate or relieve them.

The first step is identifying what is actually causing the pain — then choosing the most appropriate treatment.

Treatment may include hands-on therapy, rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser, interferential electrotherapy, or other appropriate modalities depending on what is found.

Do You Know How Your Practitioner Was Trained?

One thing many of my patients don't realise is the depth of my original training in Los Angeles, California.

During my first year, anatomy wasn't simply something we learned from diagrams or textbooks.

We dissected a human cadaver.

That meant learning the body layer by layer — muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints and their relationships to one another — and seeing first-hand how the human body is actually constructed.

That foundation in anatomy has stayed with me throughout more than 30 years of clinical practice.

When I assess pain or restricted movement, I'm not simply asking, “Where does it hurt?”

I'm thinking about the structures underneath — which muscles, nerves, joints and soft tissues may be involved, how they interact, and what may be contributing to the problem.

There is considerably more to my professional training than many patients realise, and over the coming months I will occasionally share some of that background.

Because who is treating you — and how they were trained — matters.

Why Does My Back Hurt When I Stand Up After Sitting?

If your back feels stiff or painful when you first stand up after sitting for a while, you’re not alone.

After prolonged sitting, the muscles and joints of the lower back and hips can become stiff, less mobile, and temporarily less prepared for movement. Tight muscles, weakness, reduced mobility, or an already irritated area can make that first few steps feel uncomfortable.

One of the simplest things you can do is move before you get really stiff.

Try standing up, walking for a minute or two, or gently changing position regularly instead of staying seated for long stretches.

If the pain keeps returning, the important question is not just where it hurts, but why that area keeps becoming irritated.

At ABC Health Ireland, we look at movement, muscle tightness, weakness, restriction, and other factors that may be contributing to the problem.

Treatment may include hands-on care, rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser, interferential electrotherapy, or other appropriate modalities depending on what I find.

The goal is to help you move more comfortably — not just wait for the stiffness to settle.

My X-ray Shows Arthritis — Is That Why I Hurt?

Not necessarily.

Arthritis and other age-related changes are very common on X-rays, especially as we get older. But what shows up on an image does not always match how much pain someone feels.

Two people can have very similar X-rays and very different symptoms.

That is why I don’t treat an X-ray — I treat the person.

At ABC Health Ireland, I look at:

• how the joint is moving
• which muscles are tight or weak
• where there is restriction
• how the area behaves during everyday movement
• what is actually aggravating the pain

Treatment may include hands-on therapy, rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser, interferential electrotherapy or other appropriate modalities depending on what I find.

An X-ray is useful information, but it is only one part of the picture.

The goal is to improve movement, reduce pain and help you function better — not simply focus on the word “arthritis.”

nterferential Electrotherapy + Vasopneumatic Suction

At ABC Health Ireland, interferential therapy together with vacuum electrodes is available.

This combines two treatments in one:

• Interferential electrotherapy to provide natural pain relief and stimulate muscles
• Pulsating suction cups that create a true cupping effect, drawing blood into the tissues beneath the cups and producing a rhythmic massage effect

This combination helps to improve circulation, stimulate muscles and lymphatic flow via the vacuum electrodes.

The overall effect can be very relaxing for tight, painful muscles — particularly when pain, muscle spasm and poor local circulation are all part of the picture.

As with all the modalities, it can be a treatment choice according to what is found on assessment. It may be combined with hands-on treatment, therapeutic ultrasound, laser or rehabilitation exercises.

Pain relief • Improved circulation • Muscle stimulation • Muscle relaxation

Magnesium and Your Muscles: Helpful — But Not a Cure for Everything

Magnesium is an important mineral for normal muscle function, nerve signalling and energy production.

When magnesium intake is low, some people may experience symptoms such as muscle cramps, twitching, fatigue or weakness. That’s one reason magnesium supplements have become so popular.

But there’s an important point:

Not every muscle cramp, tight muscle or painful area is caused by magnesium deficiency.

Recurring muscle problems can also be related to dehydration, overuse, restricted movement, weakness, nerve irritation, medications or other health factors.

At ABC Health Ireland, I like to look at the bigger picture. Nutrition and supplements can certainly support recovery, but they work best alongside appropriate assessment, movement and rehabilitation when there is an ongoing musculoskeletal problem.

Good food sources of magnesium include:

• nuts and seeds
• leafy green vegetables
• beans and lentils
• whole grains
• dark chocolate

If you choose a magnesium supplement, the form and amount can also make a difference — and more is not necessarily better.

Support the body nutritionally — but don’t ignore persistent pain, weakness or cramping.

What is therapeutic ultrasound, and how can it help?

Many people hear the word ultrasound and think of imaging. But therapeutic ultrasound is different.

At ABC Health Ireland, therapeutic ultrasound may be used to help with certain muscle, tendon and soft tissue problems. It is commonly used as part of care for issues such as:

• muscle tightness
• tendon irritation
• shoulder pain
• hip pain
• back pain
• scar tissue or restricted soft tissue areas

The treatment uses sound waves delivered through the skin to the affected area. Depending on the condition, it may help support healing, improve local circulation, reduce soft tissue restriction, and make the area more comfortable to treat and rehabilitate.

Most importantly, I do not use it as a “one-size-fits-all” treatment.

At ABC Health Ireland, I choose treatment based on what I find during your assessment. That may include therapeutic ultrasound, other electrotherapy modalities, hands-on care, and rehabilitation exercises depending on what is most appropriate for your condition.

The goal is not just temporary relief — it is to help you move better, function better, and recover more effectively.

Why does pain keep coming back in the same place?

Often, the painful area is only part of the story.

Recurring back, neck, shoulder or hip pain can be linked with muscle tightness, restricted movement, weakness, or movement patterns that keep overloading the same area.

That’s why at ABC Health Ireland, I don’t just focus on where it hurts.

I look at how the area is moving, which muscles may be involved, where there may be restriction or weakness, and what could be contributing to the problem.

Treatment may include hands-on therapy, rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, low-level laser or interferential therapy, depending on what I find.

The goal is not just to calm the pain — it’s to help you move and function better and reduce the chance of the same problem repeatedly returning.

Have you ever thought:

"It gets better... then a few weeks later it's back again."

Recurring pain is frustrating, but it doesn't always mean something is seriously wrong.

Sometimes the pain settles, but the underlying cause hasn't been addressed.

That might include:
✔️ Muscle weakness or imbalance
✔️ Stiff joints
✔️ Poor movement patterns
✔️ Repetitive strain at work
✔️ Returning to activity too quickly

Simply reducing pain isn't always enough. Understanding why it keeps returning is often the key to longer-lasting improvement.

At ABC Health, we take the time to identify what's contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, therapeutic ultrasound where appropriate, rehabilitation exercises, and practical advice to help reduce the likelihood of your pain returning.

If you're tired of treating the same problem over and over again, perhaps it's time to ask a different question:

"Why does it keep coming back?"

Does Your Upper Back Feel Too Tight to Take a Deep Breath?
Breathing isn't just about your lungs.

The muscles, joints, and rib cage all need to move freely for you to take a comfortable, deep breath.

After long hours at a desk, driving, or working on a computer, many people develop stiffness through the upper back and rib cage. Over time, this can contribute to a feeling of tightness, restricted movement, or the sensation that it's difficult to take a full, deep breath.

At ABC Health, we assess how your spine, ribs, and surrounding muscles are moving. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and advice to help restore normal movement and improve overall function.

Many patients are surprised to notice that, as their upper back becomes less restricted, breathing simply feels easier and more comfortable.

If you've been feeling unusually tight through your chest or upper back, mention it at your next appointment. Sometimes improving movement can make a noticeable difference.
