Solas Relaxation is a bilingual meditation and relaxation company founded by the journalist and writer, Katie McGreal. She provides relaxation classes for all ages in English and Irish. All classes are tailored to meet the needs of the students. She is a Relax Kids Coach. These classes follow seven steps; game playing, peer and self massage, movement, positive words and thinking, stretches and focusing on the breath. There is then a relaxation section where a visualisation is read out while the students sit or lie down to listen to it and fully relax. During adult classes, there are three types of meditation; a visualisation, a walking meditation and a sitting meditation.

I have been thinking about this rebrand from Solas Relaxation to The Mindful Language School for a while now.

I have been teaching mindfulness for over 10 years now and Irish for over 7 years and I have always kept them so separate. The Mindful Language School allows me to bring them together.

Mindfulness is a practice that teaches us to see what is in front of us, not just what we want to see and learning new languages teach us how to see the world from the perspective of new words, new cultures and new terms. Language learning is also very stressful!

When you are standing in front of someone trying to remember the word for ´orange´ and itś just not coming it is because when you are stressed, your brain doesn´t work. When we are in a stressful situation, our mind goes into survival mode so we cannot think. Mindfulness teaches you simple techniques you can use to ease some of that stress.

When I was 17 I spent three weeks in Astruias with a Spanish family. I said about 4 words in those three weeks. I understood minimally what they were saying at the beginning and then at the end, I understood a lot more. I also maybe said about 4 extra words over the last week but I barely spoke because I couldn't. My brain shut down when I needed to speak.

I could and would think of what to say in my head, but it never made it out. Being around people that were fluent in Spanish and possibly getting it wrong meant that I was terrified to speak, so I didn't!

But when I got back to school the following September, my understanding and ability to speak was so so much better! I felt more comfortable speaking in Ireland when I knew everyone else was learning.

When I had been in Spain, my brain was on high alert and stressed all the time, and when you are stressed, your thinking brain doesn't work. When you are stressed your brain is in survival mode which means it is just trying to get you out of this stressful situation alive, it doesn't care if you know how to say words properly, it just wants you out alive!

So, what do I do differently now, 20 years later and living in Spain?

When I notice I am starting to feel overwhelmed, stressed or anxious because I don't know what is going on, I take a breath. I acknowledge that I am feeling stressed and I let myself feel worried, but I also acknowledge that I am trying to understand people in my third language. It is OK that I don't understand.

Sometimes I can calm down in the moment, sometimes I can't and I have to walk away but my knowledge of mindfulness techniques, breathing and how the brain works means that I don't beat myself up about it. I just let it happen.

Welcome to The Mindful Language School where we know that language learning is really hard and stressful so we have created an environment where you can learn in a calm and relaxed way.

At The Mindful Language School we offer one to one language classes, group classes and also mindfulness recordings, sessions and challenges in English, Spanish and in Irish. Mindfulness and meditation is taught slowly and with a lot of the same words used over and over again so if you would like to learn a new language and also use it in a practical way, put mindfulness and mediation options are for you.

All of our classes are for beginners or advanced, in each language (currently Spanish, English and Irish) and whether you want to do a language class or a meditation session, we cater to experienced practitioners and complete newbies.

En los clases de Mindfulness para niños, hacemos muchas cosas diferentes.

Jugamos un montón, hacemos masaje, estiras de yoga y más! Los niños y niñas no los gustan estar tranquilos. Le gustan haciendo cosas y así durante los clases ellos aprenden muchas maneras que puedes usar para estar más tranquilos. No solo es que tienes estar muy tranquilo en el suelo para practicar mindfulness, puedes hacerle en muchos maneras diferentes.

It is rebrand time!

Welcome the The Mindful Language School!

I am so excited to finally announce the rebrand that I have been thinking about and working on and that allows me to incorporate my language teaching and my mindfulness teaching.

Language learning is so stressful. Trying to have a conversation with someone in a language that you are still trying to get to grips with is really scary! And when we are stressed or anxious, the thinking part of your brain doesn't work. Mindfulness helps us calm and relax so we can think clearly again.

Mindfulness and language learning also help you see the world through a different perspective. One is verbally and the other is through your senses. When you speak more then one language you can see the world differently then someone who only has one language. When practising mindfulness, your awareness is brought out of your mind and into your present surroundings.

At The Mindful Language School, we teach mindfulness in English, Spanish and Irish and we also teach language classes for all levels of learners of Spanish, Irish and English.

I can't wait to see how much this new language school grows and how many students we can support in a mindful and calm environment to learn new languages and to learn more about themselves and their thoughts, emotions and feelings.

May was not without it's challenges but

because I went into it with the mindset of Miracle May, all of the negative did not let me lose sight of what a beautiful month it was!

It is good weather again so I can wear my fun summer clothes, I went to the beach and swam in the sea, I started my first ever solo group Irish class and it has been so fun and easy! I was at a women's circle and had a lovely weekend of meditation and great times with friends and every time I had a little miracle happen - a new badminton player showed up, my friend suggested I watch a new really good show while I was sick, my friend responded with remorse when I called him out on bad behaviour - I acknowledged it and was grateful for it, which meant that I saw more miracles.

All month I have had Miracle May written on a post it by my computer and for June I will have Joyful June written there because intention and words are so powerful!

So I challenge you to try it - have a Joyful June with me and see what happens!

En la clase de mindfulness para ninos en Vagalume, normalmente hacemos dibujar para el relax. Lo hacemos en silencio con un poco musica suave y no hablamos o gritamos. Somos pensando sobre la cosa que estámos haciendo - y este es mindfulness.

Con ninos puede estar dificil hacer meditación, ellos quieren hacer otras cosas, no quieren quedar en el mismo sitio, quieren movar y cosas así. Entiendo este, después muchos anos de ensenar mindfulness en escuelas, con familias y en campamentos del verano y así tenemos que cambiar la manera que hacemos en meditación.

Si quieres venir y a ver que tal es tu nino o nina en este tipo de clase, tenemos nuestra proxima clase a las 17.00 en Vagalume en el miércoles.

When we are stressed, the thinking part of our brain stops working.

One of my students said that when she is in a situation with people she sees as at a higher language ability then her, she struggles to speak at all. That is normal. That is biology. When we are in what we persieve as a stressful situation, our brain goes into fight, flight, freeze or faun mode, so the only thing it is thinking is Get out of this situation alive! Our brains haven´t developed past our cave people, just survive the wild animal days which means that if you are in what your brain thinks of as a stressful situation-to communicate in a language youŕe learning, for example, then the thinking part of your brain will shut off completely and you won't be able to think of what you want to say.

This is why it is so important to feel safe and comfortable when you are learning a new language, and why mindfulness is so important so when you start to feel stressed, you can quietly take some deep breaths and calm yourself down so your brain can kick into gear again.
