📌Thickened Toenails

Thickened toenails are a common foot problem and can affect people of all ages, although they become more common as we get older. The nail may become thicker, harder, discoloured or more difficult to cut, and in some cases can cause discomfort or pressure when wearing shoes.
There are several possible causes. These include fungal nail infections, repeated pressure or trauma from footwear, previous injury to the nail, certain skin conditions such as psoriasis, and natural changes to the nail as we age. Sometimes more than one factor is involved.
At our foot clinic, thickened nails can be carefully reduced and trimmed to improve comfort and appearance. We can also assess the nail to help identify the likely cause and advise on appropriate treatment or ongoing foot care.
