It starts innocently enough. 😂🌿

You follow me for a few pet health tips…

…and suddenly you’re reading ingredient lists, looking at what’s actually in the food bowl, questioning whether your pet needs quite so many supplements and becoming strangely interested in poo. 💩🐾

And then somebody mentions homeopathy and down another rabbit hole you go. 😂

I suppose this is what happens when you start looking at the whole animal rather than one symptom at a time.

“Detox” is one of those words we hear everywhere.

But when I work with a pet, I don’t start by reaching for a detox powder, herb or supplement.

I start with a much simpler question:

What is coming into this animal’s body every single day?

Their food. Their water. What they walk through outside. What we clean our floors with. What is used on their coat and skin. Parasite treatments. Household dust. Even the bowl they eat from.

Because there is little point trying to empty the bath while the tap is still running. 🌿

This month’s newsletter is Part 1 of my new detox series, and we’re starting with the most practical step of all:

reducing unnecessary exposure.

I’ll show you some of the everyday sources we often don’t think about — and, more importantly, the small changes you can make without becoming frightened or trying to create an impossible “toxin-free” home.

🌟 19 years old… and “bounding with energy.” 🌟

Mini came to me nine months ago with stage 3 chronic kidney disease and constipation. And this is the kind of update that makes my heart very happy. 💚🐾

Her mum tells me her appetite is “through the roof”, she rarely strains anymore, and some mornings she asks for three or four breakfasts! 😄 Most importantly, she is bright, energetic and truly thriving.

And then there are her kidney results. After previously being classified as stage 3 CKD, her latest testing no longer showed the abnormalities that had led to that staging.

At 19 years old, I think Mini is a beautiful reminder of why I never look at age or a chronic diagnosis and assume there is nothing more we can do. 🌿

With individually tailored nutrition, supplements and natural support, my aim is always to give the body what it needs to function as well as it possibly can... and to support not just numbers on a blood test, but vitality and quality of life.

And Mini certainly seems to have plenty of that. ❤️🐱

I’m Hanka. A vet who spent over a decade in conventional practice.

Then I lost my best friend to cancer. She was 37.

And it changed the question I was asking. Not „what medicine do I give this symptom“ — but „why is this happening at all.“

So I went back. Certified in veterinary homeopathy, animal nutrition, herbal medicine. 🌿

Not instead of conventional care. Alongside it.

If your dog or cat has a chronic illness and you feel like you’ve tried everything — there may still be more support available than you’ve been told. 💚

Not every probiotic is the right probiotic. 🦠

And not every dog or cat with gut issues needs one straight away.

This is one of the biggest myths I see around gut health.

A pet has loose stools, wind, itching, reflux, recurring digestive issues or has recently had antibiotics… and the first thing many people reach for is a probiotic.

And sometimes, that can be helpful. 💚

But probiotics are not one-size-fits-all.

Here is what I wish more pet parents knew:

🦠 1. Probiotics are strain-specific
Different strains can have different actions in the gut. So it is not just about whether something says “probiotic” on the label... it is about whether it contains the right strains for the job.

🔢 2. More CFUs does not automatically mean better
CFU stands for colony-forming units... the number of live bacteria in the product. But a bigger number does not always mean better results. Strain, quality, tolerance and the reason for using it all matter.

🌱 3. Sometimes the gut needs prebiotics instead
Prebiotics feed beneficial bacteria already living in the gut. So sometimes the answer is not adding more bacteria, but supporting the ecosystem that is already there.

💨 4. Prebiotics are not always gentle for every pet
In sensitive animals, too much too soon can cause wind, gut noises, loose stools or belly discomfort. This is why I usually introduce them slowly and carefully.

🌿 5. A probiotic rarely fixes the gut by itself
Gut healing often also needs diet changes, gut-lining support, hydration, inflammation support, and a look at medication history, stress and the whole animal.

Sometimes the best support is a probiotic.
Sometimes it is a prebiotic.
Sometimes it is a synbiotic.
Sometimes it is a postbiotic.
And sometimes the gut needs to calm down first before we add anything more. 🐾

This is why I don’t choose gut supplements randomly.

I choose them based on the animal in front of me. 💚

It looks like dark earth… but it can be a beautiful support for your pet’s gut. 🖤🌿

Humic acid is one of those supplements I really love because it works gently, but it can support the gut in several important ways.

It is a natural, earthy substance formed as organic matter breaks down in soil over a very long time. And in the gut, it can interact with unwanted substances, minerals, microbes and the gut environment. 🌱

Why do I like it for dogs and cats?

🖤 1. It can act as a gentle binder
Humic acid can help bind certain unwanted substances in the gut, such as pesticide residues, mycotoxins, bacterial toxins and some heavy metals.

🌿 2. It can support the gut barrier
This makes it especially interesting for pets with dysbiosis, leaky-gut patterns, sensitive digestion or inflammatory gut issues.

🦠 3. It supports the microbiome environment
A healthy gut needs the right terrain. Humic acid may help support a calmer, more balanced gut environment.

⚖️ 4. It may support mineral balance
Because humic acid can interact with minerals in the gut, it may help create a better environment for nutrient absorption and use.

🐾 5. It is a gentle all-rounder
I don’t only think of it for sick animals. A healthy gut still has to deal with food, residues, microbial by-products and everyday environmental exposure.

That is why I often think of humic acid for pets with:

🦠 dysbiosis
💩 loose or inconsistent stools
🌿 leaky-gut patterns
🔥 gut inflammation
🥣 poor nutrient absorption
🌍 toxin exposure

But as always, gentle does not mean random.

Even with a beautiful gut-support supplement like humic acid, I still look at the whole animal: stool quality, diet, medications, health history, sensitivity level and what else is going on in the body. 💚

Because gut healing is rarely about one product.

It is about creating the right support for the animal in front of us. 🐶🐱

🐶 Does your dog’s itching keep coming back?

You calm one flare…

Then the paws become red again.
The ears become sore or smelly.
The licking starts again.
And before long, everyone is awake at night with the scratching.

It can feel incredibly frustrating, especially when you have already tried shampoos, food changes, supplements or medication.

At 19 years old, Clinton could easily have been seen as “just old.” 🐾

But his story shows why we need to look deeper. 💚

Clinton has been under my care since October 2024, and he is a beautiful example of what careful, individualised, integrative support can look like for a senior cat with more than one chronic health issue.

He is living with:

🐾 chronic kidney disease
🐾 pancreatitis
🐾 blood pressure sensitivity
🐾 digestive issues
🐾 recurrent ear inflammation
🐾 stress sensitivity

This was never going to be a one-diagnosis case.

And it was never about one magic remedy. 🌿

Clinton still needed conventional veterinary care:

🧪 bloodwork
🩺 blood pressure checks
💊 medication when needed
🚨 urgent care during flares
🐾 ongoing monitoring

But alongside that, we built a naturopathic plan around the whole cat.

His food was adjusted carefully. 🥣
His hydration and phosphorus balance were supported. 💧
His pancreas became a bigger focus when his body showed us it needed to.
Some supplements were added.
Some were paused.
Some were kept only for flare-ups. 🌿

Because with older, sensitive animals, more is not always better.

The goal was not to “make him young again.”

The goal was to help him feel as comfortable, stable and supported as possible, while still honouring who he is. 💚

And that is what I love about Clinton’s case.

He is not cured.
He is not young.
He still has chronic conditions.

But he is supported.
He is monitored.
He is listened to.
And he is still himself. 🐱✨

Old age does not mean we stop asking questions.

It means we listen more carefully... to the blood results, the appetite, the stool, the stress levels, and the tiny changes only a devoted guardian notices.

🌟 When a senior dog starts running for the first time... 🌟

Just a few months ago, Pippin was struggling with recurrent pancreatitis and digestive problems.

Today, her mum tells me she hasn't had a pancreatitis flare-up for more than three months. But what makes me smile even more isn't just that she's stable...

It's this:

🐾 She jumps out of bed in the morning.
🐾 She wants to play several times a day.

Those are the moments I love most.

📚 5 things I would never do when starting natural support for my dog or cat 🐾💚

Natural support can be wonderful.

Herbs, homeopathy, mushrooms, tissue salts, nutrition, probiotics and supplements can all have a place. 🌿✨

But “natural” does not mean random.
And it does not mean one-size-fits-all.

The biggest mistakes I often see are:

📖 starting too many things at once
📖 copying what worked for someone else’s pet
📖 ignoring medications or medical history
📖 continuing something that clearly does not suit the animal
📖 expecting chronic illness to change overnight

Natural support works best when it is thoughtful, gentle and chosen for the animal in front of us.

Because two dogs may have the same diagnosis…
but need very different support. 🐶

Two cats may have similar symptoms…
but completely different sensitivities. 🐱

That is why I always look at the whole picture:

📚 symptoms
🥣 diet
💊 medication history
🧪 test results
🌿 sensitivities
🐾 behaviour and energy
💚 the animal’s individual needs

Natural support should feel clear, safe and tailored... not overwhelming or confusing.
